What is SMTP: Whenever a person sends an e-mail message from his or her computer, the mail is going to be routed through different intermediate servers before it finally reaches its intended destination. The mail server that guides and governs the routing process of the e-mail messages works according to a protocol named SMTP standing for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. SMTP enables a server to communicate directly with the client computer. It was developed in the mid 1980's for secured and reliable transfer of mails between computers.

Working of SMTP: SMTP is purely a text based protocol that makes use of reply codes and a small set of commands for communication. SMTP is highly effective and reliable and requires nothing except a stable data connection.

SMTP Port- SMTP protocol communicates through TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) port number 25. Being reliable in nature, SMTP does not work with the non-reliable UDP platforms.

SMTP Commands- In its primary form, SMTP protocol comprises of 10 commands that are user for effective communication between the server and client. Some of the popular commands have been listed below:

EHLO/HELO: This SMTP command is used to identify the client to the mail server.

MAIL FROM: This command specifies the mail address of the client.

RCPT TO: This command specifies the mail address of the intended recipient.

DATA- Governs the actual data transfer.

RSET- RSET or Reset specifies when an ongoing mail transaction requires to be aborted.

VRFY- Seeks confirmation from the receivers whether the argument correctly identifies a mailbox or not.

HELP- This command helps the servers to forward helpful data to the sender.

QUIT- Quits the transfer session after the mail has delivered in the mailbox of the receiver.

SMTP Authentication: Commonly abbreviated as SMTP AUTH, it is a further extension of the original SMTP protocol. It allows SMTP clients to log into the system using one of the authentication mediums
