With a population of just under 60,000, Mérida is the capital of the autonomous region of Extremadura. Founded in 25BC, it is a city with a huge and important architectural heritage and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Among its most celebated "must-see" sights are the Roman Amphitheatre, the 'Puento Romano', the 'Temple of Diana', the 'Circus Maximus', the 'Arch of Trajan' and the remains of the 'Acueducto de los Milagros'.
