I was visiting with my mother this weekend and she was showing me her high school photographs and annual. The picture on the left is where her best friend signed the back of the album and the photo on the right is her Senior year picture.

This is our box of memories. It contains various bits of ephemera Catherine and I have collected over the last twenty of so years; the bill from our first Valentine's meal, the property details leaflet for our first house, the hospital tags from when our children were born, and so on.

We used to keep them in a money-box shaped like a rocking horse, but the memories outgrew that. This is more conventional, but bigger.

After participating in last Summer's "ICAD" (Index Card A Day") here on Flickr, I realized I had fun decorating an index card with a saying on it. As I teach religion classes, I thought a good way to reinforce the memorization of Bible verses was to have the students design a card, one a week, and then submit them the day of their memory test. I collected the cards from last August through May, and then posted them on a poster board. The 8th grade class members received their posters at their graduation ceremonies.

Some students outdid themselves with the decorations. I used rubber stamp designs, computer printed icons, stickers, etc. as a start--they did the rest.

One of the core memory boards hanging in our office collection… the industry standard for computer memory in the 1960’s. Here you see 18 bytes of memory in 2x3 inches, where each hand-woven ferrite ring can be individually magnetized or not, representing 1 or 0.

Until I took this macro zoom shot, I had not noticed the unusual wiring for the cores on the left. The wiring on the right is standard to core memory arrays (to read and write a magnetic bit to the iron core at the intersection of a particular row and address line).

The core memory arrays would often have parity bits for each data row (for error detection). Perhaps the wiring on the left implements a parity operation. It has repeating loops across pairs of rows. Does this look familiar to anyone?

(The only marking on the 7x9” board is Xak 4292. It has 300 bits in the memory array, with 15 pairs of rows with 10 ferrite cores in each row.)

So often, a photo is a partial memory which must be filled in by the imagination. What's not in this picture is the reason I was there to take it. About 15 minutes earlier, I was driving past this spot and wished more than ever before that I had my camera with me. A large mob of young tourists was hurrying into this scene to run around in the fog and throw snow at each other. It was mystical and colorful. By the time I got back with my camera, the scene was empty and gray. Even the fog seemed diminished without the spontaneous moment of play that preceded the present silence. Still, I was glad to be there. While I hunted for the right perspective to frame my memories, another photographer arrived to capture his own experience of the place.

I used this fun and colourful patchwork fabric to create a memory board. A perfect place to collect a little girl's most precious pictures, postcards and anything else she might fancy...

Don’t look into his eyes, He will made you nostalgic

Don’t touch his weapon; he will transfer you to your childhood

Don’t mess with him, He will assassin you to your memories.

“Gulti” is a very common childhood weapon for village children. First 12 years of my life I was in village. I had this thing. I used to hunt down birds with this tiny weapon. But when I realized that, killing living creatures in this way is very bad and a sin, I quit. I still missed those tension free days.

Today, in between rain showers, I was able to photograph one of my favorite places. Yes this old beaten down dock. To most, it is no more than that, but to me there is nothing that triggers more memories.

It is this spot that I learned to fish as a child with dad and since have caught literally hundreds of fish from this spot. It was where friends and I would dare each other to jump into the murky waters below. And it was simply a place to get away from it all.

To this day, I try to come here every chance I can and take a second to be thankful for all the simple things in life that I should never take for granted.

Thanks,

Aaron

Our memory is a landscape, our bodies are its map. We can trace lines with our fingers that will take us down roads, we can find markings that symbolize a monument in our past; these are our scars.

For a series on mapping, I took to photographing the physical and psychological impression scars leave on a person. The ambiguity of the physical in the photograph is to pair with the ambiguity of the quote, not depicting the incident or injury, but acting as a brief view into the human psyche. Rather than romanticized and sensationalized, the photographs are gritty depictions of gritty truths.

The series Memory Markings has been made into a limited edition book which can be bought at Toronto's Gladstone Hotel briefly.

A new Series With Alexander the Great

Week 30

With all the talk about Evelyn standing (with some support) since week 26, we thought it's about time to actually show her in the act. So here's a photo of Evelyn armed with a mischievous smile as she is caught red-handed trying to destroy her mommy's magazine rack. :) There were times that once standing up right, Evelyn would let go of her hands and stand freely for up to a second. Of course those moments were too fleeting for me to capture with a camera, but it will come sooner or later.

Evelyn has gotten over whatever gave her that temperature last week and is almost back to her own self now, She still has a little runny nose, but we think it's just residual. Feeling better, Evelyn is also eating better. She's enjoying a healthy mix of proteins (beef, chicken, pork), grains, fruits, vegetables, and even some yogurt. With her tummy full of food most of the time, Evelyn is also taking less of her mommy's milk; but except for when she's cuddling up with her mommy late at nights. At that time nothing beats suckling on mommy's breasts. Haven't gotten the double chin yet, but she's doing so well that we think the doctor is going to be happier with her weight at the end of the month.

Another thing I want to talk about is a baby's memory. I don't know when it starts to develop for babies, but Evelyn is showing that she is beginning to retain memory. Of course the biggest example is how she remembers that it's a lot more fun with mommy than daddy (the Deepest Bond thing again). She's also showing that she's recognized strangers and is beginning to be afraid of strangers. She would remember rooms that are more fun (usually rooms with more toys for her to explore). She also remembers undesirable situations like being locked up in her crib. When Evelyn was heading into a dangerous situation, we used to just picked her up and put her in a different place with other toys; but if we do that now, she would remember exactly what she was doing; Evelyn would just turn around and quickly crawl right back to where she was heading. It's good to have memory, but for a young curious baby like Evelyn, it also spells more troubles.

To everyone...it's been a tough year but together we move forward to embrace our future...
