"Stanley Kwok, architect and developer, has been a key influence in the shaping of the Vancouver Style and the way we plan our city. From the co-operative planning process that evolved in the 1970s to the megaprojects of the 1990s, Stanley Kwok was there. Whether as designer or decision-maker, the legacy of Stanley Kwok can be seen not just in Vancouver but in the skyline of cities from Halifax to Dubai."

As seen in January 2020 from the corner of Main and East Chippewa Streets, the M&T Center (left) and 50 Fountain Plaza (right) are two of the components of the last major urban renewal megaproject in downtown Buffalo to consume whole blocks of existing buildings. Constructed in phases in the closing decades of the 20th century, the various buildings of the complex serve as an excellent demonstration, preserved in real time, of the changing of the guard from Late Modernism to Postmodernism. It was in 1981 when the demolition of the buildings that formerly occupied this block began, and a year after that when the first of the current ensemble, the Norstar Building at the northwest corner of Main and Huron Streets, was completed. While the Norstar belongs firmly to the Late Modern school with its sharp corners, straight lines, ultrasimplicity, and near-total lack of ornamentation, the M&T Center - the second in chronological order - shows the stylistic shift already underway: the reflective glass curtain wall on the upper floors was an aesthetic that would soon pass out of style, while the stout columns, arched windows, and cornice on the lower floors point the way toward the future. Meanwhile, the so-called "North Block" remained planted with grass through the 1980s as a temporary park, and by 1991, when the ribbon was cut on the identical-twin high-rises at 40 and 50 Fountain Plaza, Modernism had fully given way to the initial phase of Postmodernism, with all the stylized Classical flourishes that implies: an ersatz colonnade and entablature adorning the ground floor (not visible from this angle), not to mention those iconic pyramidal roofs up top. Originally known as the Key Center and home to the local offices of KeyBank, 40 and 50 Fountain Plaza have housed office space for a number of local and national companies over the years: Delaware North had its nerve center here in the 2000s and early '10s, and an IBM call center occupied several floors of the south tower for a number of years in the mid-'10s. Nowadays the flagship tenants are the law offices of Lippes Mathias Wexler Friedman and the architectural firm of CannonDesign.
Palm Islands are three artificial islands, Palm Jumeirah, Deira Island and Palm Jebel Ali, on the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Creation of the islands started in 2001. As of November 2011, only Palm Jumeirah has been completed. This island takes the form of a palm tree, topped by a crescent.
After completion, Palm Jebel Ali will take a similar shape. Like Palm Jumeirah, each island will be host to a large number of residential, leisure and entertainment centers and will add a total of 520 kilometers of non-public beaches to the city of Dubai. wikipedia
Palm Jumeirah[edit]

The Palm Jumeirah (Coordinates: 25°06′28″N 55°08′15″E) consists of a tree trunk, a crown with 16 fronds, and a surrounding crescent island that forms an 11 kilometer-long breakwater. The island itself is five kilometers by five kilometers. It adds 78 kilometers to the Dubai coastline.
Residents began moving into Palm Jumeirah properties at the end of 2006, five years after land reclamation began.
Palm Jumeirah Monorail opened in 2009; it is connected to station 9 of the Dubai Tram (Palm Jumeirah Station).
Palm Jumeirah hosts the Atlantis hotel resort and it was opened in 2010.[1]
Palm Jebel Ali[edit]

Palm Jebel Ali
The Palm Jebel Ali began construction in October 2000 and it was supposed to be completed by October mid-2008 but has been on hold since. Palm Jebel Ali was going to be built much larger than Palm Jumeirah, but has not yet been completed.[2][3]
Environmental concerns[edit]
The construction of the Dubai Palm Islands has had a significant impact on the surrounding environment, resulting in changes to area wildlife, coastal erosion, alongshore sediment transport and wave patterns. Sediment stirred up by construction has suffocated and injured local marine fauna and reduced the amount of sunlight which filters down to seashore vegetation. Variations in alongshore sediment transport have resulted in changes in erosion patterns along the UAE coast, which has also been exacerbated by altered wave patterns as the waters of the Persian Gulf attempt to move around the new obstruction of the islands. [4][5]
Dubai's megaprojects have become a favourite cause of environmentalists. Greenpeace has criticized the Palm Islands for lack of sustainability, and Mongabay.com, a site dedicated to rain forest conservation, has attacked Dubai's artificial islands aggressively, stating that:
Significant changes in the maritime environment [of Dubai] are leaving a visual scar [... ] As a result of the dredging and redepositing of sand for the construction of the islands, the typically crystalline waters of the Persian Gulf at Dubai have become severely clouded with silt. Construction activity is damaging the marine habitat, burying coral reefs, oyster beds and subterranean fields of sea grass, threatening local marine species as well as other species dependent on them for food. Oyster beds have been covered in as much as two inches of sediment, while above the water, beaches are eroding with the disruption of natural currents. wikipedia

About a year ago, one of the neighbourhood villages was demolished to accomodate a new development project to create condominium apartments.
We counted 21 cranes on the site this morning, but our view was obstructed, so there may be more. (We see 13 in this photo.)
This isn't some megaproject; it's merely a small (sub)urban renewal project – a scene that could play anywhere in New China.
