Canon has just announced the 15.1 megapixel EOS 500D, known as the Rebel T1i in the US market. The new DSLR is a response to Nikon's D90 — it's a high-end consumer model which shoots HD video. It's also Canon's second DSLR to best Nikon's HD efforts.

The 500D shoots at up to full 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) but only does so at 20 frames per second. Drop to 720p (1280 x 720 pixels) and you get a better 30fps. This compares to the Nikon D90's maximum 720p at 24fps (the same speed as film based movie cameras). The Nikon, though, records in the crappy motion JPEG format. The 500D pops out .mov files in the H.264 codec. Another nice touch is the ability to use the autofocus whilst shooting, although you only get to use the slower contrast-detection system available in the live-view mode.

Yes, the 500D has live-view, like almost every camera appearing these days. The stills mode (this is a DSLR, after all) also has some neat touches. The one we like most is called Creative Auto by Canon, and is essentially an easy way to tweak settings while letting the camera take care of the heavy lifting. The camera remains in auto mode, but the user can choose from English-language options, like “Darker/Brighter" or “Blur Background" to customize the image. For beginners not coming from a manual camera background, this is a great way to learn without actually messing things up.

Otherwise, there isn't much that stands out, other than a good top “film speed". The 500D goes up to ISO 3200 in regular mode with two extra emergency settings of 6400 and 12800. The rest of the specs are unsurprising but good — a 3", 920,000 pixels LCD, 95% viewfinder coverage, HDMI-out, self-cleaning sensor, face-detection. You know the rest.

The 500D will cost just $800 for the body and for $900 in a kit with the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. That, in case you were wondering, is quite the bargain. Available May.

Of course he isn't a tri-color, but the out-of-focus plants in the foreground might fool you.

He had to take it easy. Aero suffered a small injury, probably due to running into a sharp branch while running in the woods.

Well, I went back through over 100 photos tonight and re-edited them! I thought I was done a couple days ago for December's LA Gallery show, but art is never done until it's done, and even then. . . Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!

The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)

Some (almost) final edits for December's Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!

Let me know your favs.!

i had to test the theories sooner or later. decided to go with a relatively crappy camera to see if a really good camera is necessary for nice shots.

the minimum focus distance of the k610i is too far to fully utilize the full resolution (as seem from the top pic where model is blur yet background is sharp). the bottom pic is in effect around 1megapixel and still not as sharp as i would i like it to be.

lighting for top pic is ambient room lighting from ceiling lamp, bottom pic was 1 halogen lamp (100w, about 7x10cm light aperture) on the left and 1 mirror to fill in the right side in addition to ceiling lamp.

top pic shot at iso800, bottom at iso200.

conclusions :

- sufficient lighting is very important to reduce noise on lower-end cmos sensors. with my DSLR, i could easily go up to iso1000 and still get a decently low noise level. the k610i on the other hand has severe noise at iso800.

- even a light source half the size of the model with a mirror supplying fill light is insufficient to illuminate it evenly.

- ceiling lamps are inadequate for providing lighting for shots for cameras with noise problem.

Happy '23 everyone Here is a 47 megapixel, 63 panel mosaic of the Sun, I finally did it! Check out the full res full disc or the detail crops Atmosphere was super turbulent so it's not perfect but happy that it's better than previous attempts. Always trying to improve so this is with a newer workflow. The last image is with a simple white light filter, labelling the active sunspots and overlaid Earth + Jupiter for perspective.

For the Solar enthusiasts, I tested the new BlurXterminator and while it is nice with DSO, it is not suited for Solar so keeping it out of the workflow which is currently AS3 to stack, Photoshop to stitch, Astrosurface for decon -> Imppg for curves/unsharp masking ->fitswork 4 for wavelet sharpening -> Photoshop for colour.

Equipment used:

Bresser 127L/1200 doublet, Quark Chromosphere, Astronomik UV/IR L-3 (as ERF), PlayerOne Apollo-M Max, Skywatcher EQ6.

3.3 megapixels of amazing digital power! This camera was a big deal when I bought it (around 10 years ago). I was so excited to have 3+ megapixels!!! Yay. And remember those SmartMedia cards??? Um. Yeh.

I think it still works. I don't know why it wouldn't. BTW, I took this picture with an example of Olympus' more current technology - the E-PL1 Pen.

testing Canon EOS M 18 Megapixel Mirrorless Camera

This was my second digital SLR, after a K100D. It produced some great photos despite its now small 6 megapixel APS-C sensor, especially if you used the RAW option. Compared with the earlier K100D, the Super had a much improved dust removal and shake-reduction system, accepted SD-HC cards and had the KAF-2 lens mount that carries electrical connections for Pentax DA* lenses with their built-in supersonic autofocus motors. When LCE offered me only £60 trade-in against my new Pentax K7, I decided to keep it. Eventually, I traded it in towards my current K5.

Shot on my Canon Rebel XT with the cheapest lens available (50mm f/1.8). 19 images were stitched together automatically using Hugin to create this 37 megapixel image. The virtual sensor area is close to 6x4.5cm medium format.

Next I want to do a wide angle image with my 85mm lens, covering roughly the same surface area as 4x5. That would yield a 290 megapixel image...
