Malibu Beaches! Nikon D800E Dr. Elliot McGucken Fine Art Photography for Los Angeles Gallery Show!
Yet more photos and more final edits! I was up at 4:30 AM the past four days shooting sunrises! Awesome sunrises over Point Dume thie time of year in Malibu.
Then I spent all day today moving over 75 large photos into the gallery! Most of these are framed and matted with 13"x19" metallic prints and an 18"x24" mat and a 3" wood-grain black frame! They look awesome! Stop on by Bel Air Camera's Gallery downstairs if you are close to UCLA or in Westwood. Give me a head's up, and I will meet you there if I'm free.
I thought I was done a couple days ago for December's LA Gallery show, but art is never done until it's done, and even then. . . Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!
And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!
The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)

I am loving the colors of this film. I plan on ordering newer stock.
I picked up this Studios camera last year at a convention knowing I wanted to build a robot guy out of it. The hardest part was that it has a 6 foot USB cable attached to it that I didn’t want to remove, so I just wrapped it around his body and put the plug on his arm like a tool. The cord does limit articulation a lot, but I like the look of the wrapped wire so much that I continued it into his limbs by weaving some pneumatic hose through them. This is my first real Bionicle MOC, but I love how it turned out so much that I want to do more. I’ve had this guy built in a nearly finished state for months now, and he’s actually been taking a lot of my photos for me recently.
I also built him some accessories like a lense he can hold up to his face and a button he can either hold in his hand or store in his forearm.

from my first ( 2 MP ) digital camera , back in 2002 (lots of editing done to day) - no new materials to brag with :(
Lake Temagami in Nipissing District in northeastern Ontario, Canada, situated approximately 80 km north of North Bay. The lake's name comes from Te-mee-ay-gaming, which means "deep water by the shore" in the Ojibwa language.
.
The Anishnabai have been living in the area for at least 6,000 years after migrating from the east coast of North America. The land was divided into familial hunting and trapping territories.
Since the main east-west fur trade route bypassed Temagami to the south, settlement of this area by Europeans did not come until 1834. That year the Hudson's Bay Company built a store on Temagami Island, Lake Temagami. The town itself was founded by Daniel O'Connor, who in 1903 formed a steamship company on the lake and established its first store on the future townsite. By 1906, he had built three hotels on Lake Temagami: Hotel Ronnoco, Temagami Inn and Lady Evelyn Hotel.
The inspiration and wonder of the area were brought to millions around the world, in 1907 when Grey Owl, arrived in Temagami. He was employed by the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests as a ranger and the cabin he frequented still exists on the Mississagi River. His subsequent books and extensive lecturing in Britain and the United States brought tremendous attention to northeastern Ontario and the issues surrounding wildlife conservation.

Cicadas have a pretty amazing life cycle. They live underground for 17 years, climb up a tree, molt, make a whole bunch of noise, mate, then die. It's bizarre to think of an insect being almost as old as I am. I found this guy buzzing around on his back, then I spent about half an hour photographing him then sent him on his way. Not sure how much longer he will live.
This photo is a composite of about 5 or 6 seperate photos stitched together manually and then focus stacked from a few more. The photos were taken with the bellows and the 50mm reversed on the end. The orangish background comes from an orange hat I used as a background. The final composite works out to be about 15.8 megapixels.
Make sure to view it at it's largest size, the detail is amazing.

Spring Time in the Malibu Canyons! Nikon D800E Dr. Elliot McGucken Fine Art Photography for Los Angeles Gallery Show!
Yet more photos and more final edits! I was up at 4:30 AM the past four days shooting sunrises! Awesome sunrises over Point Dume thie time of year in Malibu.
Then I spent all day today moving over 75 large photos into the gallery! Most of these are framed and matted with 13"x19" metallic prints and an 18"x24" mat and a 3" wood-grain black frame! They look awesome! Stop on by Bel Air Camera's Gallery downstairs if you are close to UCLA or in Westwood. Give me a head's up, and I will meet you there if I'm free.
I thought I was done a couple days ago for December's LA Gallery show, but art is never done until it's done, and even then. . . Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!
And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!
The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)
Some (almost) final edits for December's Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!

Photos taken on a Fujifilm MX-1200 1.3 megapixel camera. Came across them whilst looking through my old photo archives.
A quick edit in lightroom and I am very impressed with what that camera caught.
Shot from the crowd, by me, with no experience on using cameras at all.
...als plötzlich eine Krähe kurz vor dem Kleinen landet
Sparsame 10 Megapixel auf einem CCD-Sensor von 1/1,8" (das sind 7,2 x 5,3 mm), die fast sagenhaften drei Bildformate JPG, RAW und sogar TIF (!), ein Brennweitenbereich von 35 bis 420 mm (KB) und f/2,8(3,7) bis f/11 Blenden, dazu ein Makrobereich von 5 cm (Weitwinkel) bis 200 cm (Tele) machen fast eine eierlegende Wollmichsau aus der handlichen, 730 gr leichten Bridgekamera, die sogar ein Innenzoom hat! Keine der späteren Superzooms kann meines Wissens damit aufwarten! Der eingebaute Blitz reicht von 0,30 bis 7 m (Tele 5,30 m), sehr gut!
Bescheiden für heutige Verhältnisse sind die Auflösungen des Suchers und des klapp- und drehbaren 2,0" TFT LCD Monitors mit 207.000 Bildpunkten. Aber immer noch lassen sich ansehnliche Fotos mit der FZ50 machen!

A couple of miles north of me today, the archaic practice of field burning goes on. There are pros and cons to field burning, and I don't want to get into a debate about it. I just wanted to record the power of the smoke. Also, I wanted a bit different take for the Power Lines Group.

These were shot with Nikon's best D800 with the 14-24mm wide-angle Nikkor lens. 7 exposures were taken at 1 EV intervals, and combined in photomatix to bring out the shadows and highlights.

Inspired by this computer generated contemporary art post (and after I got the script to work and posted it here), I wondered what the visual result would be from an algorithm like this:
– paint a canvas with a base color
– pick a random coordinate on it
– mutate the color at that coordinate a bit
– randomly walk in any direction
– mutate a bit from the previous color, then drop that color there
– repeat (but don't repeat on already used coordinates)
– if all adjacent coordinates have been colored, pick a new random coordinate on the canvas
– repeat (this is less necessary if the virtual bacteria colonize: )
Then I wondered what happens if the bacteria duplicate–if they create mutated copies of themselves which repeat the same thing, so that you get spreading colonies of color-pooping bacteria.
I got a python script working that accomplished this, and while with great patience it produced amazing output, I was frustrated with the inefficiency of it (a high resolution render took a day), and wondered how to make it faster.
Someone with the username "scribblemaniac" at github apparently took notice of image posts I made linking to this script, and they figured out how to speed it up by many orders of magnitude, and opened a pull request with a new version of the script. (They also added features. And used a new file name. I merged the request.) The above image is from the new version. It took ~7 minutes to render. The old version would have taken maybe 2 days. (If the link to the new version goes bad it's because I tested and integrated or copied the new version over the old file name).
In a compiled language, it might be much faster.
I did all this unaware that someone else won a "code golf" challenge by coming up with the same concept, except using colors differently. (There are all kinds of gorgeous generative art results in various answers there!–go have fun and get lost in them!) Their source code is down and forsaken apparently, but someone in the comments describes speeding up the process in several languages and ultimately making a lighting fast C++ program, the source of which is over here. Breathtaking output examples are over here. Their purpose is slightly different: use all colors in the RGB color space. Their source could probably be tweaked to use all colors from a list.
