Photographs of Lukas for his family Christmas cards this year.
Spent the past weekend at an offshore island. It was just beautiful!!
This was one of the last photos I took ... the reason for this involved 2 large dogs unafraid of the water (and who were exceptional swimmers), one oar, an inflatable kayak and a small digital camera.
The story goes like this:
I was paddling down in a southerly direction alongside the east coast of the bay, admiring the houses I'd never get to spend a night in, far less a weekend, and turned into a small bay. The bay brought me to the end of that side of the coastline so I proceeded to paddle west in a straight line across the bay. I turned to paddle north and came in line with a house that actually had people (most of the houses were empty).
Then I observed two large, no - very large - brown dogs. They were tall and solid. At the time I saw them, they had already seen me and were trotting down toward the end of the jetty. Then, sploosh!! In went the first one. Sploosh!! The second one followed. They looked like identical twins. I could see from the distance I was that they were very large (I don't think I mentioned how large they were before). Now they were swimming toward me. They looked like brilliant swimmers. So I sat there looking at them, marveling at them actually.
I first thought that they would soon realise how much of a distance away I was from them and that they would turn back. But they didn't turn back and I started to marvel once more at how determined they were to swim this far toward me.
Their heads were just gliding across the water. Obviously they were very strong as you couldn't see a shred of effort, the way they were just gliding across the water. I thought they would make a nice photo. So I took my camera out of the waterproof Aquapac and raised it up to take a shot.
As they swam closer to me, I noticed how very large their heads were and imagined the size bodies that came along with them.
Then I thought that were they to playfully jump onto the kayak, they would puncture and deflate it and that would leave me treading water quite far away from the house and friends. Then, the thought struck me - what if they weren't a playful pair at all, and in reality were coming to take a megabite out of me?!!
With that, I grabbed the oar and started to create some more distance between me and the dogs. The owner called out to the dogs to come back and I called back "Are they bad?" and he didn't answer. One of the dogs immediately obeyed (the one who was behind) while the first dog continued on his swim.
I paddled some more and called out again "Are they bad?" and the owner still didn't respond and called the dog again and this time he obeyed, made an about turn and paddled back toward the house.
Now I turned my face to look northward and saw my camera. Lying in water. Face down. In the kayak. I'd completely forgotten that I was holding the camera to take a photo, when I grabbed the oar. That was the end of the camera. Happily, the card isn't spoiled, so I've been able to put up these pics.
My friends think I got away from an impending traumatic experience. Yet I think it's more likely that the dogs were friendly, however, we'll all never know which conclusion is the right one.

Spam is a luncheon meat that knows a pretty poor if unfair reputation but this Spam recipe is not only a fun pun, it is a good example of an easy and delicious way in which Spam can be served.

Aerial view from my airplane's open window; I've been going through thousands of images lately in an effort to organize and cull excess megabites from memory, so here's one from two years ago that escaped my appreciation.

I often drive around the Wolf Creek Causeway area with camera in lap, or beside me looking for deer, or turkey or a sunset. I came upon this bobcat stalking something in the weeds beside the road. It was getting dark. without really thinking I flipped the camera to movie mode and started shooting. unfortunately I had it on the lower resolution setting, but still felt lucky to get these movie clips. I also was trying a feature that allows taking still pictures at the same time so there are noticeable. pauses. I have previously uploaded still images that I had extracted from these clips. and am just now able to upload these larger megabite clips on a faster computer. Sorry about the jiggles and shakes, it was the best I could do while driving and holding a camera.
