We enjoyed the fire on this cool January day :>)! "Also done on site was all of the iron work...hand-wrought by local ironmongers. All wall and ceiling light fixtures in public places, the balustrade of the main stairs, the floor lamps, hand irons and fireplace ornaments in the lobby, and grill work on windows and doors was done here, as was construction of the original wooden furniture of spool turned style."

Here's my little Mom in the "Wakulla Springs Lodge which showcases an American style popularized during the 1920's and 30s, which combines Spanish-Moorish and 'art deco' motifs. The Spanish influence is evident in the massive masonry and stucco walls, tile roofs, arched windows, and wrought iron grill work surrounding the windows and doorways. Ball appreciated craftsmanship...and his specifications are a living history of the precision used in the Lodge's construction."

"Ball's eye to quality and durability is best evidenced by his lavish use of marble throughout the Lodge. Most of the permanent appointments are marble: Floors, baseboards, thresholds, counters, stairwells, desk tops, partitions in bathrooms (what you see here), table tops in the gift shop, lobby, veranda, and nearly all window sills."

"Other features unique to the Great Lobby are the 16 sold brass, recessed, lighted theatre lobby display cases, many containing original pictures from the time of the Lodge's opening in 1937. This type of fixture has become extremely valuable as a collector's item," not to mention the 11' 2" stuffed alligator, the legendary "Old Joe" below :>))

"It was later revealed that Mr. Piplack was not just another painter...he had been the last court painter for Kaiser Wilhelm. His work is breathtaking in scope and inspired in detail. Arts of three cultures are blended so harmoniously that it appears at first to be Spanish-Moorish. But closer examination shows it to be a combination of European folk art - a motif common from Italy through Scandinavia, notably Germanic, with intricate Arabic scroll work - and Native American, depicting local wildlife scenes. Piplack's past is revealed by the many crests incorporated in the designs, showing European nobility."
"The Wakulla Springs Lodge, completed in 1937, is an excellent example of Mediterranean Revival architecture." I used two of Julie's photos here to make a collage to show you the unique wood ceiling (maybe 'dead head' cypress wood)

"The doorway (between terrace & lobby) is surrounded by bright ceramic tiles, designed specifically for the Lodge and hand-made in Spain."

Last time we were here we had fried green tomatoes in this fancy dining room :>) Did I tell you that then?? (I'm feeling too lazy to go back and see what else I did or didn't tell you before :>(

The 16 foot high ceiling "in the lobby is 'heart' cypress...from the very interior of the...50 year 'dead head', immersed trees. The lobby ceiling gets the most attention from its decorative painting...which was actually an afterthought. It was originally planned as a vast expanse of plain cypress. But as the story goes, shortly after completion of the Lodge, a German named Piplack approached Ball in the lobby and explained he could paint 'nice designs' on the ceiling. Ball accepted the offer with glorious results apparent." (Some of the expanse of hand-hewn panels still have adz marks visible)
