"Ball's eye to quality and durability is best evidenced by his lavish use of marble throughout the Lodge. Most of the permanent appointments are marble: Floors, baseboards, thresholds, counters, stairwells, desk tops, partitions in bathrooms (what you see here), table tops in the gift shop, lobby, veranda, and nearly all window sills."
"Most of the marble came from Tennessee. It was delivered rough-cut to the site, where it was finish-cut and custom fitted. Ball brought an expert marble craftsman from TN to do the marble work. His expertise can be seen everywhere - the marble is fitted so meticulously no grout can be seen."

"Two special features grace the rim of the Great Lobby...the marble and iron staircase and the original Lodge elevator, an art deco masterpiece. The interior of the elevator walls are walnut with quarter sawn, face matched grain and marquetry panels...an inlay using vari-colored woods. This is the only known surviving, period art deco elevator still in use."
Check out my 45 sec. video of this and more of the Lodge! I would have tried to take better photos and definitely gone for a ride if I had read the brochure first! I took photos of some of the old photos on the walls of the Lodge, some lit and most with these natural worm pocked wood frames.
My daughter taking photos of old photos of the springs that are lit from behind in the 1937 lodge with some old furnishings as well.

"This technique of face-matching was used wherever two or more marble panels were needed, as in the public restrooms (here) and main staircase. Such attention to detail is seldom noticed by visitors, but does contribute a subtle uniformity to the decor." Leave it to me to not "follow the pack" :>)!
"The north entrance to the lobby, from the terrace, is through a full-length, glazed, two-door Moorish archway. It is crowned by a fanlight and flanked by marble pilasters carved in a 'spiral-turned' style and surmounted by floral capitals. Wrought iron grills over the fanlight and door glazing complete the package and add an elegant touch. A close look at the execution of each grill's design shows a masterpiece of simplicity..each is a single piece of iron bent and then repeated."
"...at 70 feet three inches, is in the gift shop. The marble is 'face matched' ...eight pieces that were cut from one block of marble. This process is known as quarter-sawing: a block of marble is cut in half, they are each cut in half again, and each quarter in half...to get eight panels...thereby producing a matching grain pattern."
