Bruges, such a beautiful city. I admit I rarely went to it, although it's not that far from my home. The reason is, I'm not such a big fan of medieval architecture, I prefer modernism. How could I be so wrong. I managed to make some incredible long exposure shots, definitely will go again.

The Grote Kerk in Dordrecht is a fantastic find for anyone who is interested in religious buildings or medieval architecture. Alternatively known as Dordrecht Minster, the Great Church or the Church of Our Lady, this establishment is the largest church in the city. This church was ranked amongst the top 100 Dutch heritage sites on a list which was created by the department of Conservation in the early 1990s. It is noted for its Brabant Gothic style and its unfinished church tower.

The original plan was to construct an octagonal tower which would be over one hundred meters highs, however half way through the construction, it was noticed that the tower had begun to develop a significant lean. Like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the ground below the tower was too soft to support such a heavy structure, and the tower had begun to tilt. Because of the dangerous incline, the tower was never finished. During the 20th century, restoration work took place on the tower to ensure that the structure would remain safe for visitors. Despite the fact that it remained unfinished, the tower was still the tallest structure in Dordrecht for almost 500 years.

Ghent is a port city in northwest Belgium, at the confluence of the Leie and Scheldt rivers. During the Middle Ages it was a prominent city-state. Today it’s a university town and cultural hub. Its pedestrianized center is known for medieval architecture such as 12th-century Gravensteen castle and the Graslei, a row of guildhalls beside the Leie river harbor

Heddal Stave Church is not only a medieval architectural masterpiece, but also a living church for today's congregation. The church is the largest of the 28 stave churches still remaining in Norway. There appear to have been 750 - 1200 stave churches in Norway, but in the 19th century most of them were replaced by new, more "modern" churches.

We don't know when the church was built or if it was built in one or two sections. The experts are still studying the matter. What we do know is that the church was built later than the year 1196. On the wall in the exterior passasge, you can see Runes inscribed, telling that the church was consecrated and dedicated to the holy virgin Mary, maybe in 1242.

Castel del Monte - Puglia Italia

Unesco World Heritage Site

Castel del Monte was built by Frederick II and completed the year 1250. Its design uses an octagonal floor plan flanked by eight towers making it a unique piece of medieval architecture.

It is a mystic kind of place hinting at medieval astrology, mythology and complex mathematics.

Located on a beautiful fjord on the coast of Montenegro, Kotor is a city steeped in tradition and history, with remarkable scenic views. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the old city was built between the 12th and 14th centuries and is filled with medieval architecture and historic monuments. Extending over 4 kms., the city walls that have protected Kotor for centuries lead up to the fortress of Saint Ivan. This is one of the views you will appreciate on your way up to the fortress. It is impossible to deny the beauty of this place despite the poor weather on this day. Hope you enjoy!

The Château de Langeais was originally built as a medieval castle in 992 AD, by Fulk Nerra, Count of Anjou. After it was destroyed during the Hundred Years' War, King Louis XI (1461–1483) rebuilt Château de Langeais into what today is one of the best known examples of late medieval architecture. It is especially noted for its monumental and highly decorated chimneypieces. The great hall of the château was the scene of the marriage of Anne of Brittany to King Charles VIII on December 6, 1491 that made the permanent union of Brittany and France. The château was restored in the late 19th century, with an outstanding collection of tapestries and furnishings.

Have a terrific Thursday! Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for your kind comments, awards and faves -- I appreciate them all.

Chattahoochee County Jail is a historic jail in Cusseta, Georgia. It was constructed in 1902 and opened in 1911. The jail replaced a two-story log jail built in 1855. It was built with some aspects of Romanesque architecture style. It was used until 1975. The jail was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. It is located on Mt. Olive Street and Boyd Street.

It has been described as having features (brick construction, compact massing, simple detailing, and allusions to medieval architectural styles) that are characteristic of the many county jails built at the turn of the 20th century in Georgia. The two-story brick jail was built for $5,000 by the Pauly Jail and Manufacturing Company of St. Louis, Missouri.

It was being restored by the Chattahoochee County Historic Preservation Society

Warmont Castle is located north of the village along the main road. Huys te Warmont is built on the site of a medieval castle dating from 1250, incorporating traces of medieval architecture. The original timber structures were replaced by buildings that were subsequently damaged by fire in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries and rebuilt each time on the old foundations.A 16th-century drawing makes it possible to reconstruct the medieval original, when the castle consisted of a square ground-plan of four wings and four corner towers set around an interior court, the whole surrounded by a moat. The living-quarters were in the north and east wings. The massive west tower was once assumed to have been the keep, but the thickness of its walls and its dimensions are too small for this purpose. In 1629 the castle was given a new entrance range by Salomon de Bray, featuring pilasters and a broad pediment. The south tower, originally octagonal, was replaced by a square one after 1650. Owing to the various rebuilding projects, Warmond acquired an irregular character in the course of the centuries. In 1780 the castle was extensively rebuilt. Floor levels and the proportions of the rooms were altered, and the walls were stuccoed. Medieval remains were hidden by new walls and plasterwork; de Bray’s additions disappeared.

The Torre Grossa is the highest in the city with its 54 meters. Work began in the 1300s and ended 11 years later.

Girona is a city in Spain’s northeastern Catalonia region, beside the River Onyar. It’s known for its medieval architecture, walled Old Quarter (Barri Vell) and the Roman remains of the Força Vella fortress. Landscaped gardens line the Passeig Arqueològic, a walkway following the Old Quarter’s medieval walls, which include watchtowers with sweeping views.

Cases de l'Onyar

Characteristics of Girona are the picturesque houses overlooking the river Onyar. These were built over many years and give the flavor of a small Mediterranean city. The façades are painted according to a palette created by Enric Ansesa, James J. Faixó, and the architects Fuses and J. Viader.

One of these houses (at Ballesteries 29, Girona) is Casa Masó, the birthplace of the architect Rafael Masó and an example of Noucentisme in Girona. Since 2006 it has been the headquarters of the Fundació Rafael Maso. The river façade can be recognized by its unique white color.

This fortified bridge has been called "Legendary Bridge" since in 1170, Queen Sancie, widow of Gaston V, Viscount of Béarn, was accused by public rumor of having killed her newborn child.

She is to be tried by the judgement of God by water

She is led onto the bridge in a white dress, her feet and hands bound. In front of three thousand people, she is thrown into the water… A loud cry! She disappears… but the current gently pushes her to the shore at “three arrowshots”. Sancie is alive, Sancie is innocent!

Borgo Pretale has witnessed crusaders passing through on their way to war in the holy lands, and its buildings still remain today. The yard pictured here is interspersed with wild rosemary that scents the air with a rich wonderful fragrance.

Made from a digital photography from my portfolio, a digitally painted watercolor painting unveils the picturesque scene of an inner street within the fortified city of Carcassonne. The brushstrokes capture the essence of this historical location, where narrow cobblestone streets wind their way amidst ancient stone structures. The painting portrays a vibrant atmosphere teeming with life as tourists amble along the meandering lanes, enchanted by the allure of the medieval architecture that surrounds them.

The focal point of the artwork is the beautiful yellowish stone buildings, standing tall with their two-story structures, proudly displaying the marks of centuries gone by. The textured strokes of the brush bring life to the aged walls, highlighting their unique character and weathered charm. The warm hues of the stone reflect the sun's gentle caress, creating a harmonious interplay of light and shadow across the canvas.

The street itself appears alive, bustling with activity. The artist's attention to detail showcases the diversity of the passersby, their clothing and accessories hinting at various cultures and backgrounds. Curious tourists explore every nook and cranny, their eyes drawn to the intricate architectural details that adorn the buildings. Balconies adorned with potted plants overflow with vivid blooms, providing a splash of color against the ancient stone backdrop.

As the eye wanders deeper into the painting, the narrowness of the streets becomes apparent. The use of perspective creates an illusion of depth, guiding the viewer's gaze deeper into the heart of the city. Delicate shadows cast by the overhead sunlight dance along the street, adding a sense of movement and capturing the fleeting nature of the moment.

In this captivating watercolor, we are transported to a bygone era, where the fusion of history and everyday life creates a timeless charm. Invite us to stroll through the streets of Carcassonne, to admire the enduring beauty of its medieval architecture, and to become captivated by the unique atmosphere that emanates from every stone and passerby.

The Papal palace is a historical palace located in Avignon, southern France. It is one of the largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. Once a fortress and palace, the papal residence was the seat of Western Christianity during the 14th century. Six papal conclaves were held in the Palais, leading to the elections of Benedict XII in 1334, Clement VI in 1342, Innocent VI in 1352, Urban V in 1362, Gregory XI in 1370 and Antipope Benedict XIII in 1394.

Jethro Tull on stage in Worcester Cathedral. To see this Cathedral being used a a backdrop to a light show for a folk-rock band really was fantastic...this photo really doesn't do any justice to the overall effect, but I haven't changed the lighting effects, this is roughly how it looked. Hopefully you can imagine how the scale and architecture would compliment Jethro Tulls' music etc... Handheld, tweaked in Snapseed on iPad Pro.

The Gatehouse of Kirkham Priory, built c. 1290–95, is a specimen of English Gothic medieval architecture. It is a rare survival of such a gatehouse

The ruins of Kirkham Priory are situated on the banks of the River Derwent, at Kirkham, North Yorkshire, England near to the Yorkshire Wolds.

The Augustinian priory was founded in the 1120s by Walter l'Espec, lord of nearby Helmsley, who also built Rievaulx Abbey

Designated as world heritage site: October 1981

I took this photo at night in Frankfurt in 2019. The former city gate can be seen in the distance from the street with a skyscraper in the background. I have edited the picture with a free app.
