Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Cocktail Reception

A student talks about his team's project, "Payload Hauler Omni Directional (PHOD)," sponsored by Nearth. The team included mechanical engineers Alex Koslov, Jay Stillmun and Andrew Timmons, and was asked to improve upon a payload hauling device designed to transport things up and down shafts. The students focused on reducing drivetrain complexity, enclosing components and creating an easy way to use payload.

Mechanical Engineering is the fusion of

Man Machine & Material.

A student explains his team's project, "Portable Solar Powered Water Purification System," sponsored by 3M. The team, taught by Esther Gomez, assistant professor of chemical engineering, included Ali Alnuaimi (ME), Kahled Al Harmoudi (ME), Alison Filippelli (ChE) and Zachary Santner (ChE).

A colorful villa located in the coastal city of Busan, many tourists come to the cultural village on weekend vacations. Originally a safe haven for refugees after the Korean War, the district is now home to many elderly citizens and is known for the quaint pathway taking the viewer along souvenir shops, outdoor snack booths and cute cafes. Reflecting the scrappy and surviving nature of its original inhabitants, an orange tabby cat naps in the shade of the bench on a hot summer day.

Colorado State University mechanical engineering students Ali Diagre and Elisa Guzman work on a Flow Waterjet Cutter in the Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory. The cutter, donated by Flow International is being used to develop a prototype mini-production plant for cleaner cook stoves.

David Kwabi, mechanical engineering assistant professor, right, and Siddhant Singh, mechanical engineering PhD student, discuss the operation of an electrochemical flow cell designed to desalinate water at the Battery Lab in the Michigan Memorial Phoenix Project on the North Campus of the University of Michingan in Ann Arbor on Wednesday, August 10, 2022.

Kwabi is the primary investigator on this project which seeks to help with global water scarcity struggles. He and three mechanical engineering colleagues were award a ME Research Innovation Pilot grant as they continue working toward an energy-efficient electrochemical system to remove sodium chloride from brackish and sea water.

Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Cocktail Reception

Among the engineering students who are part of the research team, led by Dr. Arumugam Manthiram, to produce methanol-powered fuel cells are: (from left to right): Kaushik Alayavalli, doctoral student in materials science and engineering; Tim Silverman, doctoral student in mechanical engineering; Wen Li, doctoral student in materials science and engineering; and Adam Stockett, doctoral student in chemistry and biochemisty.

Look what we found! This sign in the mechanical engineering building explains the basics of lab safety.
