Sozialistischer Realismus ist hier in Warschau DER Baustil der frühen 50er Jahre. Wo andernorts noch alles in Trümmern lag, da hatte man unter Sowjetischer Bauleitung im MDM-Viertel ein modernes, neues, Stadtzentrum geschaffen mit einer imposanten Architektur. MDM bedeutet "Marszałkowska Dzielnica Mieszkaniowa", was so viel heißt wie Marszałkowska-Wohnviertel.

Socialist Realism was THE architectural style of the early 1950s in Warsaw. Where elsewhere everything lay in ruins, Soviet construction management had created a modern, new city center with impressive architecture in the MDM district. MDM stands for "Marszałkowska Dzielnica Mieszkaniowa," which translates to "Marszałkowska Residential District."

The pale silk of this hand-sewn example is brocaded in white in a large-scale pattern of fantastic florals and leaves, a typical design for the period. The train of the gown drapes delicately and the sides join the bodice in symmetry with exquisite ruffles. This complicated draping required a reversal of the silk when sewn together, so that only the right side of the fabric would show when properly arranged.
