The German dish Strammer Max is a hearty open-faced sandwich, a popular meal often enjoyed for breakfast, brunch, or even a quick dinner. Its core components traditionally include a slice of bread (often fried in butter), topped with ham and a fried egg. While the original recipe is quite simple, regional variations abound, with some versions incorporating cheese, tomatoes, or even roast beef (sometimes then called "Strammer Otto"). The name "Strammer Max" colloquially translates to something like "strapping Max" or "virile Max," hinting at the dish's satisfying and fortifying nature.

The Dutch equivalent to Strammer Max is called Uitsmijter (pronounced "owt-smiter"), which literally translates to "bouncer" or "one who throws out." This name is said to originate from its reputation as a quick, filling meal served at the end of a night out, just before patrons are "thrown out" of a pub. Like its German counterpart, the Uitsmijter is an open-faced sandwich, though it typically uses a minimum of two fried eggs.

While both dishes share the fundamental concept of bread, meat, and fried eggs, the Uitsmijter generally emphasizes Dutch ingredients. It commonly features white bread (though other types are used), and a significant amount of Dutch cheese, such as Gouda or Edam, often melted over the ham and eggs. The meat is usually ham, but variations with roast beef or bacon are also common. The eggs are almost always served sunny-side up with runny yolks, and the dish is sometimes garnished with a side of pickles or a small salad.

Max Gate, an austere but sophisticated town house a short walk from the town centre of Dorchester, was the home of Dorset's most famous author and poet Thomas Hardy. Hardy, who designed the house in 1885, wanted to show that he was part of the wealthy middle classes of the area, to reflect his position as a successful writer, and to enable him to enter polite society. The house was named after a nearby tollgate keeper called Mack.
