Since many of the available sequences are incomplete, the analysis is based on partial sequences (aa 393 to 548, numbered with reference to the aa sequence of BTV-VP3(T2)). The numbers at nodes indicate bootstrap confidence values after 1000 replications. The tree shown in Figures 3 and 4 were drawn using the same parameters. The CORV and CMPV isolates are shown in red font in the amber coloured circle. Full names of virus isolates and accession numbers of T2 protein sequences used for comparative analysis are listed in Table S1 (supplementary data). ?e? and ?w? after serotype number indicate eastern and western topotype strains, respectively.

I'm not an expert, however, this video tries to describe the variations of Lanston Monotype matrices that I have seen. The second matrix shown, one that I tentatively identify as solid nickel, is probably a typical copper/brass plated matrix, with a thin nickel coating. I would then suggest this was done to protect the matrix or make it 'heavy duty'. Nickel plating typically has great 'throwing power' in that it gets into every corner of the object being plated with near uniform thicknesses and would be ideal to coat a copper/brass casting matrix. I would be tempted to try it however, the most typical nickel plating processes include dangerous Cyanide compounds.
For Lanston Monotype, nickel plating would be a relatively straight forward industrial process, as nickel plating would be well established in North America as part of the automotive chrome plating industry (chrome plating is clear, when you look at a chrome plated bumper on a car, you are actually seeing the nickel). Note that the plating of this matrix with nickel does not affect type-high measurements, whereas copper plating in the third matrix shown is intended to raise the type-high measurement (to correct a shallow condition).
As a tangent comment, I have never seen an engraved Lanston matrix, however it would seem to be a logical way to produce matrices.

A couple of comments, I found the missing "ff" ligature, I had borrowed it to set up a homemade Giant Caster matrix holder. I should have left an I.O.U. note in the box. Also, I mention that there are three standard sizes of holders for these matrices, well, English Monotype has three holders, I do not know how many the original Giant Caster had for casting.
After arranging the matrices to confirm a full set, the caster person has to decide what sequence to use. One practice is to cast in ascending or descending order by the width of the type. Then, at the end of it all, to font the new type, there is a bit of work to arrange it alphabetically. The other school of thought is to cast in alphabetical order. When casting foundry matrices, I usually do the latter. Each matrix usually requires a complete readjustment of the alignment, so there is not a lot of time saved by casting in terms of set width. I imagine in the old days, foundries would just cast full lines of each letter and pull what they needed from inventory.

This is something you have not ever seen, and will maybe never see again. I experimented with photo polymer a few years ago, with the idea to make 'masters' for casting matrices. With the assistance of one of the last electrotype companies in the U.S. we sensitized a plastic photo polymer original and then copper plated it. The resulting shell was then backed up with Tin and the resulting matrix was cast with the original home-made foundry holder in the Super Caster.
A couple of comments:
As you can see, the 18 pt. casting had a large amount of flash, this is not a big deal as the matrix could have been further hand-worked or 'fitted' as the old boys say.
Second, where there were edges in the image, we proved that sharp reproduction was possible.
Third, the type image was not 100% because the matrices had some 'dirt' from the plastic plate that we thought could be chemically cleaned out better (we did a full font of 18 pt. Troy type from the digital version offered by P22). All but the one matrix seen here was returned to the electrotyper to be cleaned, and we never got them back.

Normals now working - turns out the OBJ file was loading the diffuse texture as the normal map. Check the obvious before spending 4 hours with matrices ;)
I understand these and other sets of matrices were given away by Plantin at the end of the hot-metal era to any interested customers. At least they were not scrapped for their metal content. The matrices were actually glued down to the wood tray for display. It was tedious work cleaning but the silver lining was that no matrices were missing. The crushed accented upper case 'A' was damaged before I got it (top of the picture).
The matrices were very dirty and required several casts to clean them out.
