I expect most people have heard of the conic sections, the circle, elipse, parabola and hyperbola which can all be formed by slicing a cone with a plane. I've just learned of this geometric method which can be used to find the two foci which are a separate way of defining or constructing an ellipse.

It turns out that if you take two spheres, such that they are tangent to the surface of the cone on a circle, and also tangent to the plane slicing through the cube at one point, those points where each sphere is tangent to the plane will coincide with the foci necessary to construct the same ellipse by finding the curve that is the sum of the distance from any point on the curve to the two foci.

You know, I think I would really like to study geometry more deeply, best yet as the mathematics of computer graphics. But I would want to study it à la carte, just choose whichever topics seem interesting and fruitful to me, without having to do things in the order someone else decided was best. No prerequisites either. Because if I have to know the math before I can use it then I will never use most of it, because I won't find most of it to be worth my time until I have an application to which it is an essential tool.

That's how I think math and physics should be taught, as the tools you need in order to construct your own video game.

My third grade buddy, Gary Griffith, invited Jeff Brekke and me to his house after school to hear a cool new single. He proudly set Jan and Dean’s Dead Man’s Curve on his 45rpm player and pointed out how you could hear the sound of real tires screeching in the song. Jeff and I were really impressed. Inspired, I suggested we next go to my house, since we also had gotten a cool new record. I plopped side one of Monk’s Dream on the turntable and fully expected Gary and Jeff to be as thrilled as I had been when I first heard it. To their credit, my 8-year-old friends stuck it out through the first piece. When “Body and Soul” started, Gary said to Jeff, “Want to go outside and play?” They walked outside, leaving Thelonious and me alone to ponder: “Why are we so outside the mainstream; just for celebrating all the basics of music in a brand new way?”

This is my favorite Thelonious Monk record, in my world where there are really no bad Thelonious Monk records. Here’s why I like it. It was his first recording for Columbia Records. They were the strongest jazz label of the day, with the intelligent Teo Macero, a composer in his own right, as producer. Teo knew darn well the brilliance of the Talent sitting at the piano bench (or dancing ‘round the piano, no doubt, from time to time). Monk shows a life in these recordings not found in the Prestige or Riverside recordings preceding them. Frankie Dunlop is so perfect a drummer for Monk. He understands completely what the music needs. Charles Rouse is to Monk what Paul Desmond was to Dave Brubeck, or Clarence Clemmons to Bruce Springsteen. Rouse’s tenor sax seems to have been born to grace this angular, muscular music with the perfect blend of blues, abstraction, and a sinewy mathmatics. John Ore’s bass is so buoyant that at first my 9-year-old ears thought he was free to play whatever note he pleased. Only later did I understand how structured and disciplined the music is, which makes the improvisation much more remarkable.

Here’s what you would have heard, were you Gary Griffith or Jeff Brekke, the moment I put the needle down:

Notice that the saxophone doesn’t play the melody. When Rouse comes in with the first solo, the band comes alive like a Joan Miro painting, each master spinning in his sphere, as the spheres paint a modern art canvas. To me, this was the essence of Hip, my references coming from things seen on black and white TV, sidelined in Time magazine, and satirized in Mad magazine. Hear how Monk completely stops playing chords, leaving Rouse to fend for himself for a full minute and a half! I imagine Monk getting off the bench to execute one of his famous ecstatic shuffles, but Monk comes in at just the right moment, opening with a flourish. I can understand my friends’ reaction. You kind of have to hang on for dear life when confronted with Monk for the first time.

Monk can make a piano solo devoid of prettiness but brimming with beauty. That’s what he does with the old chestnut, Body and Soul:

There are variations and chord extensions galore here; enough to give even J.S. Bach or Ali Akbar Khan ideas about music construction. There are big finger moments when you aren’t sure Monk meant to play that extra note, but it does nothing to diminish the big ideas expanding with each click of the key.

Bye-Ya is a deceptively simple shout of a tune that sets the players on fire.

Frankie Dunlop’s musical drums start by outlining the opening notes. The head is short and sweet; it doesn’t take long to get down to business. Chorus after chorus, one wonders if Charlie Rouse ever runs out of new ways to give these changes expression. Monk starts his solo like a locomotive revving up, then getting traction over stately terrain, but soon letting loose like a kite flying higher and higher, until high note chord clusters give way to a breathtaking return to Earth and the melody once again.

Had I possessed the eloquence, I would have told Gary Griffith and Jeff Brekke that this music was, for me, like playing in a vacant lot on a Summer day. The angular sloping of Monk’s notes were to me the jump I made playing Army, dodging enemy fire from my friends. The sumptuous space between chords was the beckoning of days to come as I grew to know the world further; days of light and crazy fun. Thanks, Thelonious!

The main facade of Frank Gehry's addition to the AGO is as beautiful in life as it is in images. The project sits very nicely in its urban context.

Donatello ("Donnie", "Don") is portrayed as the calmer, more logical Turtle. Like the intro states Donnie has a way with machines and is the most intellectually inclined of the sibling. He is the most knowledgeable, often speaking in so called "technobabble" with a natural aptitude for science and technology. He can also hack into computer systems, crack security codes and break through firewalls.

He is somewhat quirky and sarcastic. with his intelligence, determination, range and will-power, makes him a great asset to the team, being thoroughly investigative, negotiable, and patient. He is often on good terms with his three brothers and shares a particularly close bond with Michelangelo.

In the comics, Donatello is depicted as second-in-command. In the first issue, he is the one that killed the Shredder by knocking him and his grenade off the roof. The second issue elaborated more on each turtles' personalities and opened with Donatello soldering a circuit. Later in the issue, Donatello states that he is "familiar with some computer systems" and helps April O'Neil deactivate the Mousers. During the turtles' exile to Northampton, Donatello becomes obsessed with fixing up and repairing the many broken things within the farmhouse they were living in. Most notably he spent days and nights fixing the boiler to give his family hot running water and builds a windmill and a water wheel to provide electricity.

In the Donatello one shot, Donatello encounters an artist called Kirby (an homage to the comic artist Jack Kirby) whose mysterious crystal brings his drawings to life before disappearing. The two newfound friends journey to a dimension inhabited by Kirby's creations and help the heroes defeat the invading monsters.

Donnie is the tallest and thinnest of his brothers. His bandana is typically portrayed as purple, his favorite color (although originally in 1984 all four Turtles had red bandanas). Donnie is the tallest and thinnest of his brothers. He is co-creator Peter Laird's favorite Turtle.

Donatello has attained a mastery of Ninjutsu and stealth due to his ninjutsu training. The mutagen coupled with his training has also given him near super human level skill, speed, smarts, agility and strength. He is also a stickjutsu and kobudo master. His weapon of choice is a Bo (quarterstaff) which he sometimes uses as a tool or a walking stick, matching power, speed, and range. He often tends to fight in a more traditional martial art style emphasizing on redirecting enemy blows and defending until the optimal time to strike presents itself. Though his weapon is not as strong as Leo or Raph, or Mikey, Donnie is quite capable of holding his own against tough opponents. Donnie is stealthy like all his brothers, and like them he can hide in the shadows, sneak around without being detected, and use hand to hand combat

Donnie is somewhat a sci-fi geek, aside from Leo....though he's more of a techy geek. He will often go off on technological rants that his brothers either don't understand, don't care about or both. Donnie spends most of his time inventing various weapons and gadgets or enveloped in research, and would rather negotiate before using force. he has devoted more of his time to non-combat oriented pursuits such as the study of technology, biology, chemistry, mathmatics, and radio active mutagen.

He was named by Splinter after the Renaissance sculptor Donatello di Niccolò di Betto Bardi.

In the video games, Donatello is one of the main playable characters as he has the longest reach and most ability.

In the 1987 series's original Donatello's voice is provided by Rob Paulsen, Barry Gordon and Greg Berg as the 1989 alternate voice actor. In the 25th anniversary movie Turtles Forever, Donatello was voiced by Tony Salerno.

My August "Math Curse" block for Anne. This is the FIRST time I have ever taken pen to graph paper to mathmatically figure out a block. Fitting considering the theme! I specifically chose the circle fabric and the square fabric because I like everything to mesh with a theme. I'm a dork, I know. Hope you like it Anne!

P.S. Anne, the gray on the bottom is actually mine but it is a close match to the light one you sent. I used your light gray on the pi part.

Notre Dame de Paris ('Our Lady of Paris' in French) is a Gothic cathedral on the eastern half of the Île de la Cité in Paris, France, with its main entrance to the west. It is the cathedral of Paris and the seat of the Archbishop of Paris. Notre Dame de Paris is widely considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. It was restored and saved from destruction by Viollet-le-Duc, one of France's most famous architects. The name Notre Dame means "Our Lady" in French. Notre Dame de Paris was one of the first Gothic cathedrals, and its construction spanned the Gothic period. Its sculptures and stained glass show the heavy influence of naturalism, unlike that of earlier Romanesque architecture.

Notre Dame de Paris was among the first buildings in the world to use the flying buttress [arched exterior supports]. The building was not originally designed to include the flying buttresses around the choir and nave. After the construction began and the thinner walls (popularized in the Gothic style) grew ever higher, stress fractures began to occur as the walls pushed outward. In response, the cathedral's architects built supports around the outside walls, and later additions continued as such.

The cathedral suffered desecration during the radical phase of the French Revolution in the 1790s, when much of its religious imagery was damaged or destroyed. During the 19th century, an extensive restoration project was completed, returning the cathedral to its previous state.

Here's an interesting tidbit of information I found on Gothic architecture -

Gothic architecture itself emerged in 12th century France and was originally called "French Style." It was the dominant style between the 12th and 16th centuries, but was later mocked by some as being "Gothic"(as in backward and barbarian). The Gothic style is characterized by mathmatic precision, symmetry and a desire to reflect the glory of God through awe-inspiring architecture.

Some of the most distinctive features of the Gothic style of architecture were the flying buttresses, used to support the height of the buildings, and pointed arches (which actually originated in Assyrian and Islamic architecture).

the base point is on 7/16.

It comes from no any intention, just a happening.

I was impressed with the mathmatical beauty.

Just Opened: Frank Gehry's transformation of the AGO. This is an unusual type of project for Frank Gehry because it is located in a dense urban context. Except for one view from Grange Park there is no place that you can stand back and take in the entire project. The gallery is located very close to where Frank Gehry spent much of his childhood.

I must say, I cannot wait for the AGO to reopen on November 14, 2008.

More than 700 fourth and fifth graders from four school districts in San Joaquin County converged on the Stockton campus of University of the Pacific for the sixth annual Math Steeplechase. They were split into teams of five to six students each and each team had to solve six complex mathmatical problems with only 10 minutes per problem. The best scoring teams and schools received trophies. It wasn't all just math. Students also were taken on a scavenger hunt on campus and also played games with Pacific athletes.

Freed from the task of his first book, The Long Descent, in which he laid out all the arguments describing why technology is not going to save us, John Michael Greer, aka The Archdruid, is now able to flesh out how the coming deindustrialization might play out. I found his description of said future to be so helpful in both pragmatic and philosophical ways that I wanted to give every college bound senior a copy so that they might rethink their education and prepare themselves to both save the esoteric knowledge of our culture and learn the practical skills that would enable them to live through it.

Greer describes three stages following the end of this age of affluence. We can first expect an age of scarcity industrialization in which all our technology shifts towards making the most of diminishing resources. Then a salvage economy i.e.: obsolete high rises cannibalized for their steel and other highly refined products of the industrial age. Finally, after several generations, we arrive at the ecotechnic future in which humans have learned to use appropriate technology to live within the limits of natural resources and life reaches the nirvana of sustainability. (Ecotechnic being derived from words meaning the craft of the home. Ecology being the way of speaking of that home and ecosophy, the wisdom of the home.)

He spends a few practical chapters on the appropriate technology for growing food, housing ourselves, finding work and building community. Most of these best practices I am familiar with from my own reading. He then suggests that we will want to find a way to embed into our culture the scientific knowledge we have arrived at thus far possibly in a religious context. We tend to take our science based culture for granted so it is interesting to have him talk about how discoveries from ancient Greece survived i.e.: mathmatics and how some did not i.e: music. His observation that our popular culture is all about what's new without bothering to carry forth traditions of the past, allows him to show how our culture continually claims to have discovered something new when it's really just a rehash of something explored 20 years ago.

He spends some time talking about how home economics is a now defunct college degree that we would do well to resurrect as quite a lot of things we buy out of convenience were once made in the home; this cottage industry sector being an integral part of the economy and well being of families. He recognizes how making things at home is not yet economically viable, thanks to cheap oil, but as transportation costs turn the tables, it will make more sense.

Even more illuminating was his perspective on how our financial system is an instrument that has become so complex, its chief result is to rob the population of any real wealth by sucking every investor into gross forms of speculation. I found this to be an affirming observation given that this is what's been happening and good reason to avoid investing therein.

The perk of the book is his section on philosophy. Had I had his introduction to philosophy I wouldn't have had to drop the course in college out of disgust at what was implied. Here he explains how Hegelian thinking was all about describing progress—you mesh two things together and voila you get a new solution thus suggesting that civilization, especially Western civilization, is progressive and leads to some kind of perfection or the end of history. Greer counters this historicism with the work of Oswald Spengler who basically said it ain't necessarily so. It's just that the culture we live in thinks so. Thus Spengler studied the rise and fall of particular ways of thinking as a culture and declared that ours had explored all its possibilities of thought by the 19th century. Love those mind benders. Greer uses this discussion to illustrate how our assumptions about progress are getting in the way of thinking about stability . And that our destructive high tech life is not the be and end all of civilization. Compared to the Egyptians we pale when it comes to their 3,000 years of cultural stability.

While being a handy summation of best practices, Greer is at his most stimulating when he offers ways of rethinking our ideology and shifting towards more adaptive thinking. I particularly liked his insight on the tragic hero vs. the comedic hero. One dies for ideology while the other manages to come through somehow largely through adaptive survival. As in his first book, he emphasizes the slow unfolding of this future rather than an emergency scenario that other peak oil authors describe. He also encourages a diversity of solutions and "dissensus". Since no one can actually know what will be the scenario of the future, this decentralized diversity makes sense while empowering the individual.

This is an image of Loose note 1, Side 1 from University of Pennsylvania LJS 232: Trattato delle proportioni et proportionalità, by Varchi, Benedetto, 1503-1565, Strozzi, Carlo, b. 1517, from Florence, Italy, dated to after 1539.

LJS 232 is a treatise by Benedetto Varchi on proportion as the basis for rithmomachia, a mathematical game played on a chessboard with pieces that each have a shape and a number; a dialogue written by Carlo di Ruberto Strozzi, in which Cosimo Rucellai, who introduced the game to Benedetto Varchi, teaches the rules to Strozzi and Jacopo di Piero Vettori; and other notes on the game. Later unrelated notes and pen trials on leaves before and after main texts.
