i wrote numbers 1 through 20 on dixie cups, and all the addition problems with those sums on dry white lima beans. then we took turns picking a bean and putting it into the correct cup. T quickly decided that bigger sums are better, so began "cheating" by fishing around for the beans with the biggest numbers. he thought this was so funny, and i pretended to be mad that i was getting all the easy beans.
Every year a number of SFU instructors and the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences organize a workshop to engage Aboriginal teens in the mysterious world of math. This year's is on Oct. 23.
I was working as principal at a school today and had a group for math. They were working on VENN and CARROLL diagrams so before school I put a couple of web site bookmarks onto the 6 iMacs in that room. At some point in the lesson I released them to look at the sites and solve the puzzles found on these pages. They enjoyed that quite a bit. Fun for me too.

So, a couple of weeks ago (wearing the same sweater, I might add) I did a picture of me getting ready to tutor and having this white-board warm-up exercise of negatives and positives ready for my algebra scholar.
We are still working on negative and positive numbers and using them smoothly, but have gotten beyond adding and subtracting them. I am now checking that she can use the rules of negatives and positives when they interact with decimals, variables, division, multiplication, and especially distributing across an expression. I have the white board at the ready twice a week when I see her. This coffee shop's employees now sometimes lean over to see what I've served up for the day's session. Smile.
