The solar ray collector is illuminated with a halogen lamp of known light intensity. The heat energy absorbed by the collector can be calculated from the volume flow and the difference in the water temperatures at the inlet and outlet of the absorber, if the inlet temperature stays almost constant by releasing energy to a reservoir.

This experiment explains the principle behind the use of a parabolic trough in the heating of liquids and the benefits it offers. A parabolic trough enables a larger share of incident energy to be utilised. It so increases the efficiency of the apparatus.

The dark particles are ultrafine, high-quality powders produced from difficult to shape structural metals or ceramics. The white particles are polymer binders. By carefully mixing powders and binders, Ames Laboratory scientists can create unique blends to make components with unlimited and complex shapes.
The West Virginia University Alumni Association inducted an internationally respected business leader, the president of America’s largest physicians organization and a public relations executive into the WVU Academy of Distinguished Alumni at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, in the Ruby Grand Hall of the new Erickson Alumni Center.
The 2009 class includes Greg Babe, president and chief executive officer of Bayer Corp. and Bayer MaterialScience LLC; Dr. Nancy Nielsen, president of the American Medical Association and senior associate dean of the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences; and Scott Widmeyer, chairman and CEO of Widmeyer Communications.

Four weeks in a salt-spray chamber have turned this galvanized nut and bolt into a tiny chemical landscape. The protective zinc coating, meant to sacrifice itself first, has reacted with chloride-rich droplets to form pale crusts of zinc salts, while tiny fractures in the layer let moisture and oxygen bite into the steel beneath, blooming into deep orange iron oxides. What looks like erosion is really a slow conversation between metal and sea water — corrosion chemistry made visible, one crystal and flake of rust at a time.

This close-up shows an organic-coated steel joint fastened with zinc-galvanized bolts and nuts, after exposure to alternating climatic conditions — controlled cycles of humidity, temperature, and condensation designed to accelerate natural aging. The orange bloom of oxidation marks the gradual breakdown of protective coatings, a visible dialogue between chemistry and mechanical stress. Later tested on a universal testing machine, the sample reveals how even engineered protection evolves under time and atmosphere — a quiet yet precise record of how materials endure, weaken, and ultimately teach engineers about resilience.
