Hobbiton, located on the Alexander family's farm in Matamata, New Zealand, is the movie set for the Shire in the "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies. The Shire is a picturesque, idyllic land where hobbits live in charming, cozy homes known as hobbit holes.
The Shire
The Shire is a peaceful, rural area with rolling hills, lush greenery, and a close-knit community. It's the perfect setting for the hobbits' simple, agrarian lifestyle. The movie set includes various iconic locations, such as the Green Dragon Inn, the Mill, and Bag End, Bilbo Baggins' home.
Hobbit Holes
Hobbit holes, also called smials, are the traditional homes of hobbits. They are typically dug into hillsides or earth mounds and have a cozy, comfortable interior5. Here are some key features of hobbit holes:
Entrances: Hobbit holes usually have round doors and sometimes a back door.
Windows: They often have at least one round window, providing plenty of natural light.
Interior: Inside, hobbit holes are spacious and well-furnished, with multiple rooms, pantries, and even cellars.
Gardens: Hobbit holes are surrounded by beautiful gardens, with flowers, vegetables, and even small trees.
Bag End, the home of Bilbo Baggins, is one of the most famous hobbit holes and is known for its expansive size and many rooms. The Great Smials, the ancestral home of the Took family, is another example of a large, luxurious hobbit hole.
Visiting Hobbiton is like stepping into Middle-earth itself, and it's a magical experience for fans of the books and movies.
Continuing on my journey around the North Island of New Zealand, I spent a very exciting day touring around the Hobbiton Movie Set. After the tour I enjoyed a very nice glass of cider at the Green Dragon Inn.

At the Hobbiton Movie Set, Matamata, New Zealand
When Peter Jackson spotted the Alexander Farm during an aerial search of the North Island of NZ for the best possible locations to film The Lord of The Rings film trilogy, he immediately thought it was perfect for Hobbiton.
Site construction started in March 1999 and filming commenced in December that year, continuing for three months. The set was rebuilt in 2011 for the feature films “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”, and “The Hobbit: There and Back Again”.
It is now a permanent attraction complete with hobbit holes, gardens, bridge, Mill and The Green Dragon Inn.
Visitors can only join one of different guided tours around the 12 acre set and get a behind-the-scenes look at these remarkable movies.
Unfortunately it was raining heavily during our visit.
♥ Thank you very much for your visits, faves, and kind comments ♥
Here's a photo of Hobbiton in the morning. It's located right by Matamata kinda in the middle of the North Island. We stayed at an amazing house with no nails ( housewithnonails.co.nz ) - I talked to the lady that runs the place on the phone before we got there. I told her I had a suitcase full of nails and asked if I could bring it in. She told me no.

In Feb/Mar we started our road trip in New Zealand. Starting our trip on the North Island it led us through different vegetation and landscapes. In the next weeks I will take you on a photo tour through New Zealands North and South Island.
Matamata is our next stop on our "New Zealand Photo Tour" on Flickr. The region is very well known for its' landscape with many fields and rolling hills. Waikato region is one of New Zealands most visited regions. Due to the fact that the Alexander Farm (a big sheep and beef farm) was the perfect location for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy it became very well known. This photograph was taken during sunset only about 2 km away from Alexander Farm.
Had fun removing the Information & Street signage signs and the footpath. The signs always spoil the true beauty of such buildings as this amazing structure.

Covered by algae and loose flaps of skin, this turtle blends into its river bottom habitat. Why is the matamata camouflage? So prey won’t spot it. The matamata, an ambush predator, lies still on the river bottom, and eats unwary fish that swim near to its mouth. To breathe without surfacing, this turtle has a small snorkel in its snout.

My favourite Hobbit Hole at the Hobbiton movie set at Matamata. The village of Hobbiton from the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movies has been preserved on the farm where filming took place and it is possible to take a guided tour.
