Azamgarh, which was once associated with luminaries like Kaifi Azmi, Shibli Nomani and Rahul Sankrityayan, was portrayed as the breeding ground of terror and Islamic fundamentalism. What was erased by the corporate media was not just the glorious history of secularism for which Azamgarh had always stood for, but also the aspirations of the youth for progress, better education and jobs. Behind the distorted images of Azamgarh presented by the media an untold saga of broken dreams, loss of near and dear ones and an ubiquitous sense of cynicism unfolds in the yards and takias of Azamgarh, silently demanding for sincere audience. .

An AISA fact finding team comprised of activists from JNU and DU visited Azamgarh in UP from 28 May-3June 2011, to meet the families of young Muslim men who were detained after the Banaras, Jaipur, Ahmedabad bomb blasts and Batla House encounter and have been kept in custody for over two years without any trial by the police. The team met with families of the victims from the villages of Azamgarh City, Sanjarpur, Mubarakpur, Binapara, Israuli, Khalilabad, Chandpatti, Sarai Mir and Sammopur. The team met with villagers from different villages and collected a figure of about 16 people (Sanjarpur 2, Mubarakpur 3, Azamgarh City 1, Israuli, Chandpatti and Binapara 1 each) being detained and kept in police custody without trial, 11 people (Sanjarpur 5, Azamgarh City 2) have been picked by the police whose records or whereabouts are not known, and 2 men (Atif Amin and Sajid from Sanjarpur) have been encountered. .

One of the most interesting aspects of these detentions were that in all cases of detention the detainees are young Muslim men who were arrested without due legal procedure and then presented in the court citing the arrest at a different date and location with manifest intention of implicating them in a specific incident of bomb blast. Tarique Usmani (32), owner of a unani dispensary was picked from Rani ki Sarai checkpost on 12 December 2007 and was presented in court as one of the accused of the Faizabad bomb blast citing the arrest from Barabanki Railway station on 22 December 2007. For three and a half years no chargesheet has been produced against him and the police elicited confessions of his links with HuJi under severe custodial torture. Mohd. Sarwar, a B.Tech from Integral University Lucknow, was working in Indore with the ICSA LTD. where he was picked up by the police on 18 January 2010 but was presented in the Jaipur Court citing his arrest from Lucknow. Sarwars father, Mohd. Hanif (62), a retired lecturer of mathematics, showed the copy of the FIR that Sarwars colleagues filed at the Indore police station after he went missing. Sarwar has been accused of providing transit to the terrorists from Delhi to Jaipur but no charge sheet has been produced against him in the court. .

Innumerable cases with different charges have been filed against most of the victims relating them with several bomb blasts at a time. As for instance, Mohd.Saif (23), Sajid (24), Khalid (24) all from Sanjarpur have been implicated in 52 cases related to Delhi, Jaipur and Ahmedabad blasts. Sadique Seikh (38) a mechanical engineer by profession is another victim of the terrorism hoax of the administration-media nexus who was implicated in the charge of masterminding the Mumbai train blasts, Ahmedabad, UP blasts, Sankatmochan Blast and American center attack in Calcutta. 52 cases under MCCOCA were piled against Sadique by the Mumbai police and the media circulated his confession about his crime before he was being handed over to the ATS. The ATS and M CCOCA court gave clean chit to Sadique on the 11July Mumbai train blasts after they found no incriminating evidence against him, but he still remains in custody with charges of other bomb blasts against him. .
