A breathtaking look up into the heart of the Rotunda, the iconic annex of the National Library of Finland (Kansalliskirjasto) located in Helsinki. Completed in 1906, this masterpiece of Art Nouveau architecture was designed by architect Gustaf Nyström. It features a symmetrical, oval staircase capped by a beautiful glass skylight, seamlessly extending the library's capacity with early 20th-century structural elegance.
The institutional history of this landmark ties deeply into Finland's grand geopolitical shifts. Following the devastating Great Fire of Turku in 1827, Russian Emperor Tsar Alexander I, serving as the Grand Duke of Autonomous Finland, decreed that the university and its invaluable library collection be permanently relocated to the new capital city of Helsinki.
This imperial intervention laid the groundwork for the monumental neoclassical main library building, which opened its doors in the 1840s. Designed by the famous German-born architect Carl Ludvig Engel—the mastermind behind Helsinki's iconic Senate Square—the historic site remains a majestic fusion of 19th-century empire style and later Art Nouveau engineering.

Een adembenemende blik omhoog in het hart van de Rotunda, de iconische uitbreiding van de Nationale Bibliotheek van Finland (Kansalliskirjasto) in Helsinki. Searching the shelves in our basement laundry/storage room, I came upon a little box of plastic, multicolored board game pegs. The game board that they belonged to was nowhere in site. Still, I instantly recognized them as pieces from a board game. While my wife and I both had vague recollections of playing a game with these pieces, neither of us could immediately dredge up the name of the game. Fortunately, with the help of a little internet sleuthing, we were finally able to pin it down to MASTERMIND.
