Opened in 1955 in the Park Forest Plaza. This was the first Marshall Field's to open in a shopping mall. Park Forest was the first fully-planned post World-War II suburb in the nation. Store closed in 1997 and sat vacant until 2010 when it was finally razed.
Taken along Main Street, the north side of the store.
Sadly, Minneapolis' annual SantaLand display appears to have come to an end. For many years, the Dayton's department store was a Christmas tradition in the Twin Cities--the 8th floor being home to a display which changed themes on a yearly basis. Since transitioning to Macy's, the display has remained the same (A Day in the Life of an Elf). However, the iconic building was recently sold, bringing an end to the historic department store along Nicollet Mall and its festive display.

The flagship store of the former Marshall Field and Company was build in several stages.. Designed by D.H. Burnham & Co., the northwest corner of Washington and Wabash (left) the site of the initial building (an 1879 structure at the northeast corner of State and Washington [at right] was later razed and replaced in 1907). The north half of the State Street store (center) was next, completed in 1902, The final addition was the rest of Wabash Avenue in 1914.
Marshall Field & Company, Retail Store. State Street Aisle. One Block Long. Marshall Field & Company, the Retail Store, the State Street Aisle, First Floor This is the most beautiful aisle in the store, thronged daily by many thousands. Its stately white columns, extending the full length of a city block, present a magnificent vista whose artistic decorations herald the changes in seasons and proclaim the meaning of special events. Specimen FMNH PR 2081 is the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossil ever discovered. It was unearthed in 1990 by paleontologist Sue Hendrickson (now, the fossil's namesake).
The Field Museum purchased Sue in 1997 and displayed the fossil in Stanley Field Hall. In 2018 Sue was removed to make make room for a cast of Máximo, a tintanosaur (the largest dinosaur discovered to date).
On 21 December 2018 Sue returned to public display in the suite pictured above. This new gallery highlights what scientists have learned about T. rex, notably the way in which the gastralia connect to the abdomen.

Walnut Room Salad
mixed greens, mandarin slices, almonds, toasted sesame dressing. This side salad came with the Chicken Pot Pie entree, but can be purchased alone for $4.50).
"The evolution of the Walnut Room on State Street in Chicago began when a member of our millinery department brought homemade pot pies for her clients so they would not go hungry while shopping. A few years later, her pies became the central offering of the tea room. Demand called for more space, and in the late 1890s the very first restaurant in a department store was opened. The Walnut Room, the grande dame of our seventh-floor restaurants, soon grew to 17,000 square feet, with Circassian wood imported from Russia and Austrian chandeliers contributing to its elegance and comfort." ~ Marshall Field's (Now Macy's) On State Street, Chicago
The theme for this year’s Macy’s Flower Show is “Carnival.” The display on the 9th floor allowed aerial views of the store.

Louis Comfort Tiffany designed ceiling at Marshall Field's consists of over 1.6 million pieces of favrile iridescent glass.. the largest work of it's kind in the world.
If I had more time and it wasn't the day after Thanksgiving I would have spent more time trying to capture this stunning ceiling.
We were here for this year’s Macy’s Flower Show themed “Carnival.”

Clay Aiken, American Idol sensation, seen here after the resurrection of Snow White while a dwarf looks on. "I just assumed he was gay, not that there's anything wrong with that," Ms. White remarked, "you know, whatever. He broke that bitch's spell, so it's all good. After this window gig is over I'm going to have the Queer Eye guys pull an intervention on his hair, though."
From the Marshall Fields (r.i.p.) window in 2004. Ironically I saw that Clay Aiken was playing down the street at the Chicago Theater right after I took this.
1930s postcard of Marshall Field & Company, Chicago, main retail store. "At Christmas time--this brilliantly decorated tree, 50 feet tall, stands majestically on our seventh floor."
