I took this photo on November 12, 2004, at the gala opening for "Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years" at The Field Museum.

Barack Obama had just been elected days before, and everyone was giddy to see the new Junior Senator from Illinois in the same room as the Senior Senator from Massachusetts, Ted Kennedy.

And Michelle looked simply fabulous.

After Senator Kennedy's surgery this past week, and with Senator Obama's nomination now secure, I thought it appropriate to dust off these digital pics and share.

Inside an historic landmark, the old Marshall Field building on State Street, Chicago.

Looking down one of the aisles at Field's on State. I'm not sure from what era this is, maybe 1920s or 1930s. Field's is gone but will never be forgotten.

Dayton Hudson made a major investment into the Marshall Field's State Street store in the early 1990s. Basically the entire block was cohesively linked together into one floor/building. This atrium with two sets of escalators and new elevators was a major way to get the store ready for the 21st century.

Marshall Field's is on the National Register #78001123, and is also a National Historic Landmark.

The State Street side of Marshall Field's (now Macy's State Street) was designed by the firm of Daniel Burnham and Company in 1902 and 1907. Marshall Field's is on the National Register of Historic Places #78001123, and is also a National Historic Landmark.

Marshall Field and Company Store in Oak Park (1928). Oak Park was one of two suburban locations (along with Evanston) chosen by Marshall Field and Company to expand to. The building is intended to resemble to Marshall Field's main building in downtown Chicago and is identical to the one built in Evanston.

In 1987, while under BATUS ownership, Field's State Street store underwent significant restoration. In 2004, while Field's was still owned by Dayton Hudson/Target, another extensive restoration of the landmark State Street store, costing $115 million, was begun; the last of the renovation was completed after the May acquisition. The 2004 renovations included the installation of new lower-level shops, removal of steel grates from the upper portions of the store's historic light wells, and the addition of an eleven-story atrium in what had been an alley and mid-store light shaft.

Marshall Field's flagship store on State St, Chicago, IL

In 1892, the structures between the 1879 building and Wabash Avenue to the east were demolished and D.H. Burnham & Company was commissioned to erect a new building in anticipation of the influx of visitors from the World's Columbian Exposition. The nine-story "Annex" at the northwest corner of Wabash and Washington was opened under the direction of Burnham associate Charles B. Atwood[5] in August 1893, towards the end of the exposition. In 1897, the old 1879 store was rebuilt and had two additional floors added, while the first of Marshall Field's Great Clocks was installed at the corner of Washington and State Streets on November 26.

In 1901, Marshall Field & Co. was incorporated, converting from a private partnership. Spurred on by Selfridge, Marshall Field razed the three buildings north of it which had been occupied since 1888, as well as the Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan-designed 1879 Central Music Mall at the southeast corner of State and Randolph in 1901. In their place rose a massive, twelve-story building fronting on State Street in 1902, including a grand new entranceway. In 1906, a third new building opened on Wabash Avenue north of the 1893 structure, which had now become the oldest part of the store. -wikipedia

Inside the old Marshall Field's building, now occupied by Macy's, you find this beautiful work of art. The glass mosaic dome was designed by Louis C. Tiffany, built by a group of 50 craftsmen that took 18 months completing work in 1907. It is both the first dome to be built in favrile iridescent glass "Favrile" means handmade and the "iridescent effect" was obtained by mixing different colors of glass while hot. "Favrile iridescent glass" is a type of art glass patented in 1894 by Louis Comfort Tiffany. It contains over 1.6 million pieces making it the largest glass mosaic of it's kind.

The mosaic is located near the Washington entrance near the escalators. If you want a closeup look go to the fifth floor in the lingerie department. If you enjoy the work of Tiffany and or art glass there are two more examples within a block's walk. There is an amazing collection of stained glass panels, including some designed by Tiffany in the underground pedway just outside Macy's basement on the north end of the store. Right near InFields bar and grill. Where they have $5 drink specials everyday. youtu.be/AP1qp85U2qA

Then if you go a half block east of Macy's you'll find the Cultural Center. Where you will find another Tiffany masterpiece the world's largest stained glass dome. youtu.be/FKikzrrGUiI

The Chicago Olympic bid crew must have had fun picking the poster for this location. You could not tell me that this was an accidental pick. The archer is totally pointing his arrow towards the Marshall Field plaque. Funny how these signs are still on the building years after Macys took over and stripped away the Marshal Fields name for their weaker brand. The Olympic poster crew must be Fields fans as they wanted to truly POINT out that it's still a Fields.

About the posters:

Chicago is making a bid to host the Olympics in 2016. Posters, flags, advertisements went up in the Loop area of downtown Chicago for the International Olympic Committee visit to evaluate Chicago's venues and plans for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The posters say, "Imagine."

This was a wonderful neighing hobby horse that momma gave Jason when he was five. It seemed like a remarkable toy to us in 1983. She bought it at her favorite store, the old Marshall Field in Chicago. I think the chaps and vest must have come from there as well. There is an amazing clock that hangs from the side of the building and she'd love to tell friends to meet her under the clock at Marshall Field's. The clock is still there, but it's no longer the same store.
