Foreground: the site of the future Block 37 Shopping Center. The tall brown terra-cotta building in the center houses the Ford Oriental Theater, a former movie house turned into a live-action theater. On the right are high-rise dormitories for the School of the Art Institute, with a Borders bookstore on the bottom level.

I found a cache of t-shirts at Macy's New York with old department store logos on them. I could not bring myself to buy them because the ones I liked the best were in a color I did not like. Plus, there were 10 of them at $18 a pop.

Sigh.

Holiday shoppers take a break after visiting Marshall Field's Great Tree - State St., Chicago, IL.

Sometime in the 80's, due to a schedule conflict, I had a day-long layover while taking the Greyhound bus from Athens, Ohio to Cincinnati, I watched this mall being constructed. for more infomation about the former mall, check out www.deadmalls.com/malls/columbus_city_center.html

The new stripe of blue reflectors are from a recent stop at Farm and Fleet!

The State Street side of Marshall Field's (now Macy's State Street) was designed by the firm of Daniel Burnham and Company in 1902 and 1907. Marshall Field's is on the National Register of Historic Places #78001123, and is also a National Historic Landmark.

I thought others might appreciate these tidbits of forgotten history of People of Color.

Please feel free to leave any comments or thoughts or impressions... I look forward to reading them!

The theme for this year’s Macy’s Flower Show is “Carnival.” The display on the 9th floor allowed aerial views of the store.

The toy department at Marshall Fields (Not Macy's :P) wasn't quite as cool as I would have liked, but it did have these awesome gigantic Harry Potter stuffed animals that were in the $1000+ range.

"The evolution of the Walnut Room on State Street in Chicago began when a member of our millinery department brought homemade pot pies for her clients so they would not go hungry while shopping. A few years later, her pies became the central offering of the tea room. Demand called for more space, and in the late 1890s the very first restaurant in a department store was opened. The Walnut Room, the grande dame of our seventh-floor restaurants, soon grew to 17,000 square feet, with Circassian wood imported from Russia and Austrian chandeliers contributing to its elegance and comfort." ~ Marshall Field's (Now Macy's) On State Street, Chicago

Daley Plaza on the right, the City/County Building on the left. The site of the future Block 37 shopping center (w/ yellow crane) is just behind the traffic.

These three buildings may be demolished to make room for the expansion of the Dana Hotel to the east. The buildings date from 1925, 1960 and 1905, respectively. The Feltre School, a private liberal-arts institution founded in 1992, formerly occupied 22 W. Erie St. It was constructed originally for the Chicago Deaconess Home. The school purchased the building in 1998.

Left to right: SAIC dorms, the Chicago theater, the building that would eventually house the Joffrey Ballet and Loehmann's clothing store, and Marshall Field's on its last day of existence. I'm glad I caught this vista before it got swallowed up by Block 37 construction.
