Vesuvio Café in North Beach, San Francisco.

Photographs in this collection have been produced by Heather Do, Connor Rowe, Kathleen Markham, Alison Lowrie, Kenneth Chiu, Katie Salmond, Diana Chavez, Elena Toffalori, Ashley Vink, Aimee O'Dea, Liz Dolinar, Allison Barden, Justine Khoury, Daniele Alaniz-Roux, and Justin Thach at the request of Michael Ashley for the UC Berkeley Anthropology 136e class, Spring 2011. The purpose was to digitally document the cultural heritage of Vesuvio Café to not only document the cultural history embeded into the ageless walls but also to connect spatially the symbiotic relationship that preserves the legacy of beatnik culture today.

Vesuvio Cafe, (37.79757°N 122.40625°W), located in the North Beach region of San Francisco Bay, is a cultural bastion preserving the cultural heritage of bohemian era and the beatnik culture that generated its establishment by Henri Lenoir in 1949 and made infamous by the renown authors such as Jack Kerouac from which the adjacent alley is named. The building in which the bar is housed is otherwise known as the Cavalri building built in 1913 and expanded to a second story in 1918 and designed by Zanolini with Italian Renaissance revival elements. The transient existence of these unkempt literary members and their constituents is reflected in the liminal location of the former saloon restaurant at the border between the vagrant Chinese- Italian communities; by 1970[1], most of the diverse cultures regressed into economical housing . Vesuvio Café despite its rich history back to the 1950’s , are not historically preserved site; in fact, they were rented until 1999[2] by managers Chris and Janet Clyde, whose proprietary hopes to protect the building from other commercial interest. Over the years, Vesuvio has undergone its share of renovations and damages such as the 1999 retrofitting for earthquake safety or even the 1973 damage dealt to the building by an errant bus[3]. Over the years, the "I'll never forget after the retro-fitting, one man came in, he was about 55 years old and in a business suit," Clyde said. "He actually had tears in his eyes when he looked at the place. He said, `You didn't change anything.' Vesuvio has kept its character as a neighborhood bar.”[4]

Photographs in this collection were shot on April 11, 2011 between 7:30 am and 5:00 pm Pacific Time under variable natural lighting due to cloudy skies with intermittent periods of morning exposure conditions. Address: 9721- 9804 Kennedy Road, moved to 99 Thoroughbred Way

The Peterson-Jarvis House, now located at 99 Thoroughbred Way, is an important reminder of Markham's rural agricultural past. Initially this house was located at 9721-9804 Kennedy Road, which was part of the original Berczy settlement. The property was granted by the Crown to William Weeks in 1804 and the property was sold to William Cooper, Thomas Gough and Thomas Gray. The Gray family owned the property for 28 years and then the east half of the lot was sold by the Gray family to Philip Peterson in 1836. Peterson was the eldest son of the Reverend John Dieter Peterson, pastor to the Berczy community from 1819 to 1829 in St. Philips Lutheran Church. Philip constructed this house with his wife Elizabeth Fierheller in 1840. The house has experienced a considerable amount of additions in its history. As the house appears now, the rear tail of the house facing 62 Thoroughbred Way is the original 1840 structure. This portion of the house is constructed of brick with voussoir treatment above the windows and doors. This property remained with the Petersons until 1912 when it was sold to Wesley H. Johnson who eventually sold it to Edward Jarvis in 1919. It was Jarvis who constructed the main part of the house. The front section of the house as well as the second storey addition was added in an Edwardian Classicism style in approximately 1920. This house remains a landmark in the community, along with a 200-year-old deciduous tree at the rear of the house. This tree is believed to be the oldest standing tree in Markham. In 2000 the Peterson-Jarvis House became a designated heritage property under the Ontario Heritage Act.

Late 12c, 13c & 15c Church of All Saints, West Markham / Markham Clinton Nottinghamshire flic.kr/p/RfHHRS

It consists of a nave, chancel, half timbered bell turret and 17c porch.

By the late 16c the church was in a poor state – the windows were damaged, the lead covering the bells was rolled up with the wind and the fence was broken. By 1620 it was described as ‘very ruinous’ and there were ongoing problems with the state of the chancel which was repaired in 1638 by 2 farmers of the parsonage. In the 1680s the churchwardens reported the absence of a poor man’s box, locks on the chest, a book of Homilies and that the chancel floor was unpaved and part of the church wall had fallen down.

In the 19c the patron, the Duke of Newcastle, at his own expense, built a replacement church, known as the Mausoleum for his family burials, and this became the parish church , leaving All Saints to fall again into disrepair, but thankfully it was not demolished as originally planned. A heavy storm also caused part of the sanctuary wall to fall down which was rebuilt in brick..

In 20c it had become impossible for the local community to maintain the two churches and in 1949 All Saints re-emerged as the parish church and has since been restored to its present good state

In the graveyard are 2 gravestone epitaphs worth noting: -

" Ye men that harpeth after wealth, As for my parts done myself

For to lay riches up in store, and labour'd hard for to gain more

When cruel death seized me so fast I thought I'd gain'd enough at last

As for my wealth I say therefore, my will was to be kind to the poor.

A whilst your poseing thus of me; think of the glass that runs for thee"

.

"With toylsom day and ancious night, to gain great wealth was my delight.

But death o'er took me and ye summon: gave and sent my body for to rest in grave.

Defer your judgement on what I have done for Judgement Day is comeing on.

To 14 Benefactors I have left my store and £20 unto West Markham poor".
