Went down to Cramond last week and the tide was still too high for the defences and the sun too far round and spotted this marker that I thought would be a great subject.
It's nice to get some good light and this night certainly had it.
Just got a separate and bigger monitor for my Laptop so hopefully will aid my processing. The colour balance looks so different so not sure how this looks to others; but after working on laptop all the time it certainly seems to be an improvement
These small plaques are from the 50's and they were placed to help fire fighters find underground hydrants. The symbol, a small b with a crown, honors Mary of Burgundy.
My take on an old favorite. This is Mile Marker 13 on US 163 as you come into Monument Valley...near the spot where Forrest Gump ended his cross-country run.
It was pretty stark when I photographed it at mid-day and I thought a sepia toned black and white treatment suited the image well.

The name of my village, Markyate, refers to boundaries ('mark' and 'gate'). When you mark something out, you are drawing boundaries around it. Markers are signs pointing to these boundaries, many of them imaginary. There are plenty of these in the village.
The Sun Inn has long gone. The sign is still there. During the high time of the stage coaches connecting London with the Midlands, from the 17th to the 19th century, before the railways took over, there were plenty of pubs in Markyate, hotels, wheelwrights and so on, all catering for the passengers, the drivers, the horses and the coaches coming through. Today, there are only three pubs left (and one of them is new and serves drinks only, so, not really a "pub").
Why there are no photographs in my Photostream of the leaf-curling spider, Phonognatha graeffei, strikes me as a bit odd. Summer is ending when it hauls up a leaf — sometimes an empty snail shell — and tries to hide inside while often leaving its abdomen poking out. It's a pretty little thing, and clever, except for the leaving its butt hanging out habit.
Having said all that, this is probably an orb-weaving spider's web. It is bejewelled with pearly raindrops and does not hold a cleverly rolled up leaf as a rain cape. All it has is a silent "none shall pass" inference. Rudely, I ducked beneath it to get this gently backlit shot. I hope it didn't mind.
The marker for the Concord Hotel and Kiamesha Lake. The marker is at the Alder Hotel at The Resorts World Casino. The casino is built on property that had been part of the Congord Resort and Breezy Corners Bungalow Colony.
Just a couple of depth markers on the shores of Lough Neagh, at Oxford Island. This nature reserve is just outside of Craigavon in Northern Ireland, and it certainly seems capable of throwing all weather at you in a couple of hours!
One of the many standing stones on our moors which acted as way points and markers. The Heather is just starting to bloom and soon the drab terrain will be awash with colour. We have three types of Heathers in our area. Ling, Cross-leaved and Bell Heathers all bloom at slightly different times. The stone stands to about 8 feet above the road surface, not the biggest in the area but set nicely.

The Bay was calm, and the light came in just right. I made the trip to this spot specifically for the hidden bridge.
On a side note, it seems as if I needed to re-learn processing. All my usual tricks don't work so well with a digital file. The subtle details in this just wouldn't be visible with a flatbed scan of a negative.

In Japan there are different sizes available. They sale the small, medium & large versions. In Japan they are actually Solid Markers. There is no hole in the middle where you crank it up. The Japanese versions have removable sections so that you do not have deal with twisting them to get a writable surface. You can see on the large version these removable sections.
I am using this as a backup page checker....so if you see it keep coming to the top of the Birds and Wildlife UK group pool page - you are not dreaming or seeing things. It has a purpose.

Lane markers.
Lane markers in Camden swimming centre hide the fact that the water in this pool is brown from the flood waters.
As the flood waters recede no doubt the clean up operation will be intense and time consuming for all concerned.

Three re-worked images from 2021. Another version of the one with the guillemot skull has previously been used as "Guillemot Death Marker" but the other two have not been shown before.

On the Kiamesha Lake marker, a photo of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. addressing a Rabbinical conference at the Concord Resort only 10 days before he was assassinated.
Scenes from an tiny, community cemetery, just a couple of hundred yards from where I grew up in the village of Lower Nicola, British Columbia.
Photograph taken on a morning walk around the Marine Lake at West Kirby located on the Dee Estuary at high water. This marker and light is located on the River Dee side of the Marine Lake.
