I've been really inspired recently by the work of Michael Muller, specifically his celebrity portraits. Having done a fair bit of research on the man I found it particularly interesting to hear about how he started off with strobe lighting in photography, and how he grew.
One thing he mentioned was how he got himself a single light and shot with it for about a year, becoming proficient in it, learning how to utilise it and then slowly over time he added another strobe and shot with two, then he shot with three etc etc. I think it's a really good way to become comfortable and smart with what you use to shoot. It'd be so easy right now for me to book out several speedlights with all the trimmings but I'd have no idea how to use them all together.
Right now I'm loving shooting with a single off camera flash with a small softbox on it. Taking shots and seeing what happens, then trying something new. I didn't have a clue how to speedlights before Falmouth, but now I take them out at every opportunity just to play with the light and understand it more.
Maybe it's something I'll grow out of but I love darkness and shadows in my images, and I'm not huge on symmetry. Where as some people might dislike the fact you can't see the right half of Mark's face, that inability was exactly what I was shooting for. I like the mystery and moodiness of pure blacks in portraits.
Looking up at Mark after he finished leading the last pitch of Otto's Route (5.9-), on Independence Tower. My job was to now follow that rope up to the top! Colorado National Monument, April 2007.

Je rentrais chez moi cet après midi quand je suis tombé par hasard sur le team Element Skateboard en vadrouille à Lyon. Ils ont été super cool et j'ai pu passer le reste de la journée avec eux et prendre quelques portraits.
This afternoon, while going back home, I stumble upon the Element Skateboard team in Lyon. They were very cool and let me spent the rest of the day with them and I've been able to snap some portraits.

Mark Freuder Knopfler, OBE (born 12 August 1949) is a British singer songwriter, guitarist, record producer, and film score composer. He is best known as the lead guitarist, lead singer, and songwriter for the rock band Dire Straits, which he co-founded with his younger brother, David Knopfler, in 1977.
Since Dire Straits disbanded in 1995, Knopfler has recorded and produced seven solo albums, and, as with his previous band, produced many hit songs.[1] He has composed and produced film scores for eight films, including Local Hero (1983), Cal (1984), The Princess Bride (1987), and Wag the Dog (1997).[2]
In addition to his work with Dire Straits and as a solo artist and composer, Knopfler has recorded and performed with many prominent musicians, including Chet Atkins, Chris Botti, John Anderson, the Chieftains, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Bryan Ferry, George Jones, Emmylou Harris, Jools Holland, Sonny Landreth, Van Morrison, Steely Dan, Sting, and James Taylor, sometimes working as a session musician. He has produced albums for Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, and Randy Newman.
Knopfler is a fingerstyle guitarist and was ranked 27th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.[3] Knopfler and Dire Straits have sold in excess of 120 million albums to date.[4][5] A four-time Grammy Award winner, Knopfler is the recipient of the Edison Award, the Steiger Award and the Ivor Novello Award, as well as holding three honorary doctorate degrees in music from universities in the United Kingdom
