DATELINE - March 31st, 2015

we are so thankful that spring has arrived in mid-Michigan. Time to think about spring cleaning and garden planning. The joke around here is that the "in like a lion out like a lamb" still holds true (Note all the fluffy white wool). Of course it will all be melted by mid day, haha.

I've always wanted to capture Hares that are chasing each other. It is called March madness (even though right now it is mid-April) and males are fighting for the right to mate with a female.

Last night I had a very long crawling session again, but I managed to get reasonably close without being noticed. It is such a big challenge to get the right camera settings. I figured I needed at least 1/500 sec shutter speed, but I also wanted to keep my ISO as low as possible. This meant that I had to sacrifice the depth of field.

Why everyone goes to spring break

Well, we got another snowstorm today!!! It was supposed to be rain, but because of one degree difference it came down as snow! I'm now convinced that Spring isn't coming this year! So I posted these pretty Gerbera flowers to cheer me up!

In case anyone is wondering, the weird shadows are caused by the white lettering is actually behind the red metal about a half inch with the red metal cut out to reveal the white metal.

My wife is a huge basketball fan. She played at both the high school and collegiate level. Here she's showing off her form to my youngest son.

For those of you who don't know, "March Madness" is the term used to describe the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA, the governing body of college level athletics in the United States) massive basketball tournament. It pits the top 16 teams in four divisions against each other to determine the overall national champion. It is very widely followed (and bet upon). There are both men's and women's tournaments.

Entered Explore at Number 337 on March 22. Later dropped.

This is one of my favorite pieces of vinyl wall art. I originally created this scene on my daughter's wall and have recreated it again recently for a friend.

I enlarged the design to 27" X 36" and cut it in 3 strips by overlapping the edges of the design off my cutting area. After removing the tree branches and bird, I used the negative space for my "art".

Something crazy to tingle your senses until I get through these last weeks of hockey March madness. Enjoy

ODC: March Madness

My original plan foiled by rain for the last few days.

Meh.

Kansas: 72

North Carolina: 69

Do not be too disappointed with yourself that ultimately you chose a big takeout bag of Veracruz Hot Wings from La Salsa Cantina as opposed to doing Steak & Bourbon at the STRIP House, or doing the big sports bar scene at Blondies. And perhaps it's just as well that you didn't decide to hang out at Planet Hollywood. Your elderly mother living up in Seattle knows how much you love spending your birthdays on the Fabulous Las Vegas Strip. And your mother also knows how big a Kansas University fan you are, and that you would likely be in the cozy privacy of your guest room watching the Big Game! So she called to wish you a belated 'Happy Birthday' and to wish your college alma mater a glorious victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels! 🏀

Go Kansas Jayhawks!!

This is a collaboration with beautiful and talented Megan.

Actually, I just sent Megan my photo of a leaf (the upper image), and she creatively used a photo of hers (the bottom image) and combined the two into a diptych.

This diptych was created for this group. If you’re interested in making diptychs, come join us. We do this every Saturday.

Ok, the tournament is not the same for me this year. The demise of the Big East - the one that I knew and loved for over 25 years - has broken my basketball heart. No disrespect to the current Big East teams, but the Beast of the East and I arrived in Syracuse about the same time, and we kinda grew into adulthood together, raised our kids together, and many of us are retiring together. Still, I'm kind of surprised by my reaction to their absence. I thought I'd still care about the teams, but it really just isn't the same now that they've scattered to the conference winds. And, yes, I know, it's pretty ridiculous to mourn a sports league given the number of truly serious situations around the world these days. I'm not even a diehard sports fan, just kind of an ordinary one, but I feel their loss. And no, I cannot really support Syracuse as an ACC team.

But - and there is almost always a but with me - there is a positive side. In the past, my March loyalties have always been divided - much to the chagrin of daughters and colleagues (Big East) and siblings, cousins, and dad (Big Ten). This year, all my eggs are in the Michigan State basket,* As my alma mater, I've always supported them, but there was also a strong counter pull from my workplace of twenty years. Until now, when I am posting this 4-leaf clover for Sparty. Good Luck and play well, guys!

*Full disclosure: This is for the men's tournament. You can't live in Connecticut for a decade and not become a UConn Women's fan. Yeah, I know, the rest of you hate them - kinda like I hate the baseball Yankees - if you even know what women's basketball is. But that's a blurb for another posting.
