The mosaics of the marble floor represent the sibyls, scenes from the Old Testament, allegories and virtues. Most are still in their original state. The earliest scenes were made by a graffito technique: drilling tiny holes and scratching lines in the marble and filling these with bitumen or mineral pitch. In a later stage black, white, green, red and blue marble intarsia were used. This technique of marble inlay also evolved during the years, finally resulting in a vigorous contrast of light and dark, giving it an almost modern, impressionistic composition.

First thing one sees entering the massive bronze doors of el Capitolio is Italian sculptor Angelo Zanelli's impressive Statue of the Republic... a 15m tall, 22 ct gold-leafed bronze woman symbolizing the 'Guardian of Virtue & Work'. Only the gold Buddha in Japan and the Lincoln Monument in Washington, DC, are taller. In this pic you can see where the diamond is cordoned off, in the centre of the circular design in the marble floor.

Some of the mosaic design in the marble floors at Wynn Casino. Much too pretty to walk on! I'm not sure if it as true here, but an employee pointed out to us that where there is an elaborate light fixture and fancy design in the ceiling, it will be echoed in the design of the floor. Just one of the beautiful special touches in this elegant building.

Another look at the Consevatory. This is a room of grand proportions at the Eastman House. This room was expanded in 1919 when George Eastman decided that this room was too small for his needs. To enlarge this room the house was cut in half, moving the rear portion back nine feet, four inches. The table where Eastman was served his breakfast is located in this room. There is an Aeolian pipe organ in the rear of this room, behind a tiered bank of potted plants, which conceals it from view. The organ pipes are located behind lattice work on the second and third floors. George Eastman employed an organist to play while he ate his breakfast. There is a hanging planter - chandelier over the table. The walls are limestone and the floor is marble. There are abundant plants and flowers in the room. The elephant head is a replica of the original head from a 1928 safari. Located at the George Eastman House & Gardens, 900 East Ave in Rochester, NY.
