The Atrium of Abbot Argerich is the open-roofed courtyard area that sits directly in front of the Basilica. Five arches lead you to the main area. [see 3 images below + 9 sec vid of church bells ringing].

The marbled black and white floor of the atrium takes inspiration from the floor of the Capitolium in Rome that was designed by Michelangelo. The inscriptions at the centre are Latin and refer to baptism. Summarized from:

This reconstruction illustrates how the Small Bath at the Archaeological Park of Stobi, North Macedonia, may have appeared during the 5th or early 6th century AD. Based on the surviving curved walls, brick vaults, stone masonry, and archaeological research, the bathhouse has been recreated as a compact yet elegant Roman bathing complex. Located beside the Synagogue Basilica, it probably served a smaller group of visitors than the city's large public baths, while offering the same essential facilities of Roman bathing culture. The reconstruction follows the original layout of the excavated remains, including the distinctive circular bathing area, the brick-vaulted rooms, and the thick stone walls that are still visible today. Marble wall panels, colourful floor mosaics, wooden roof beams, and everyday objects have been added using archaeological evidence and comparisons with similar Late Roman bathhouses throughout the Roman Empire. The bath was heated by an advanced hypocaust system, allowing warm air to circulate beneath the floors and inside the walls. Although no reconstruction can ever be completely certain, this visualization offers a glimpse of how visitors may have experienced the Small Bath more than 1,500 years ago, when Stobi was one of the most prosperous cities in the Balkans.

An artistic reconstruction of the Small Bath at ancient Stobi, bringing one of the city's best-preserved Roman bathhouses back to life as it may have appeared during the Late Roman period.

The Archaeological Park of Stobi is one of the most important archaeological sites in North Macedonia. Founded in the 3rd century BC and flourishing between the 1st century BC and the 6th century AD, Stobi grew into a prosperous Roman city at the crossroads of the ancient trade routes linking the Balkans with the eastern Mediterranean. This collage brings together some of the site's most remarkable monuments and archaeological treasures, alongside several artist's reconstructions that help visualize how these impressive buildings may once have appeared. From the monumental Roman theatre and the elegant streets lined with marble columns to the richly decorated Episcopal Basilica with its famous baptistery mosaics, every corner of Stobi reflects centuries of wealth, craftsmanship, and religious importance. The reconstructed views of the Building with Arches and the Small Bath offer an impression of daily life in the city's final centuries, while the surviving mosaics, walls, and public buildings continue to reveal the sophistication of this remarkable urban centre. Walking through Stobi today requires a certain amount of imagination. Much of the city survives only as foundations, collapsed walls, and fragments of marble and mosaics. By combining photographs of the archaeological remains with historically inspired reconstructions, this collage attempts to bridge the gap between the ruins visitors see today and the vibrant Roman city that once stood here more than 1,500 years ago.

the galleria vittorio emanuele II in milan becomes a stage where light and shadow perform a daily ballet. The sun dips low, casting a radiant glow that dances across the marble and touches each passerby with warmth. A visitor stands still, capturing the moment, while around her the movement of the crowd blurs into the background. It's a scene of timeless elegance in the heart of milan, where history is bathed in the golden hours of the present.

At blue hour the domes of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque glow softly above the marble courtyard, where light and reflection meet in quiet symmetry. In a turbulent time for the region, may this stillness be a prayer for peace.

My eye was taken with this once smooth and polished surface, now weather-worn and aged - but in its own way equally as beautiful as when it was first mined, prepared and laid down for those feet to walk upon, almost two thousand years ago.

Among the extensive ruins of the Stobi Archaeological Park in North Macedonia stands one of the city's most intriguing excavated monuments: the Building with Arches. Dating from the 4th–5th century AD, this impressive structure is immediately recognizable by its long row of brick arches, massive stone walls, and fragments of an elegant opus sectile marble floor. During the Late Roman period, Stobi was a prosperous commercial, administrative, and religious centre at the crossroads of the Balkans. Although the exact function of the building is still debated, many archaeologists believe it may have served as an important public building, possibly even a Roman library. The surviving arches once supported an upper gallery, while the richly decorated marble floor reflects the prestige of the complex. Ongoing archaeological research continues to reveal new insights into its architecture and purpose. Standing among these ruins today, it is hard to imagine the grandeur of the original building. What survives are only the lower walls, arches, and fragments of its luxurious floor. Archaeological reconstructions help bring these remains back to life, offering visitors a glimpse of what may once have been one of the most impressive public buildings in ancient Stobi.

The Building with Arches at Stobi, where imposing brick arches and an elegant marble floor still hint at the grandeur of one of the city's most remarkable public buildings.

The Library of the National Palace of Mafra is one of the most remarkable bibliographic spaces of the European Baroque period. Completed in 1771, during the reign of King José I, it occupies the main floor of the rear façade of the convent-palace commissioned by King João V in 1717, in fulfillment of a royal vow. Measuring 83.6 meters long, 9.9 meters wide, and approximately 13 meters high, it features a cruciform floor plan and a floor paved with pink, white, and gray marble from quarries in the Sintra region. The bookshelves, crafted from exotic woods in the Rococo style according to a design by Manuel Caetano de Sousa, house approximately 36,000 leather-bound volumes, spanning works from the 14th to the 19th centuries, with a particular emphasis on incunabula, 16th-century editions, and scientific, philosophical, and theological treatises. The preservation of this collection is uniquely ensured by a small colony of insectivorous bats that, during the night, eliminate moths and other wood-boring insects. The white stucco barrel vault and the overhead lighting lend the space an atmosphere that strikes a balance between architectural rigor and decorative refinement.

This view shows one of the long corridors of the National Palace of Mafra, built between 1717 and 1755 by order of King João V. The corridor features a succession of stone arches, creating an effect of depth characteristic of Portuguese Baroque architecture. The floors display geometric patterns in polychrome marble, combining shades of pink, gray, and cream, materials extracted predominantly from quarries in the Sintra and Pêro Pinheiro region. The walls, covered in lioz stone, lend sobriety to the space. The palace, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019, has corridors totaling approximately 232 meters in length, connecting the different wings of the monastic-palatial complex. This gallery served as a circulation axis between the royal quarters and the convent buildings, reflecting the dual function of the building as a royal residence and a convent of the Order of St. Francis.

The grandeur of the prayer hall at the Hassan II Mosque, located in Casablanca, Morocco. Opened in 1993 and designed by French architect Michel Pinseau, this monumental structure is one of the largest religious buildings in the world, with a capacity to accommodate 25,000 worshippers inside. The architecture reflects a sophisticated fusion of Moorish Islamic tradition and modern engineering. The vast hall is notable for its sturdy columns and polished marble and travertine floor, which reflects the golden light emitted by the imposing Murano glass chandeliers. The ceiling, meticulously crafted from cedar wood sourced from the Middle Atlas Mountains, features a 1,100-ton retractable section, allowing for natural ventilation and a symbolic direct connection to the sky. The construction of this monument involved the work of around 6,000 Moroccan master craftsmen (“maalems”), responsible for the detailed zellige mosaics and sculpted stuccoes that adorn the walls, perpetuating ancestral techniques in a building that partially extends over the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
