Update Oct 2016: interested in a print? I didn't make it, but I've seen this print and it is quite nice.

Mini-FAQ:

The main thing I'm drawing is the NHDFlowline shapefile in NHDPlus, a dataset that originates from the USGS.

I'm drawing all of the flowlines. This includes lots of seasonal creekbeds, arroyos, etc. That's why you see so much blue in dry areas. It also doesn't include places like the Everglades where specific flowlines haven't been defined. I may have bugs with a bit of missing data, too.

My apologies to Alaska, Hawaiʻi, and the rest of the world. I'm drawing all the data in NHDPlus but it only includes the contiguous 48.

There's an artifact in the data that causes blue rectangles and variable density, particularly north of Texas and west of the Mississippi. I believe it's related to how NHD is digitized off the USGS quads.

Please do look to the GitHub project for technical details!

Over 50 years ago in Junior School we were taught how to read OS maps, use a compass , read co-ordinates, plan routes from A to B and how to find ourselves if we ever got lost.

Those skills served me well in the Army Cadet Force and all through my life.

My trusty Nikon 12 x 36 5.0 degree roof prism binoculars are now over 30 years old and have served me very well indeed.

I have the confidence to get from A to B without drama, hassle or surprises from the basic skills I was taught as a child.

Week 24 : Confidence

NDCS team away day looking at the impact of the Cameron government's cuts on social care for deaf children and young people. We visualised the cuts as a dark raincloud, and NDCS campaigns and services as a sunburst of hope.

Challenging times. I do like colourful mind maps and post it notes, and here's the result of our afternoon session.

This adult male is perched on a photo prop near our fountain. There are not that many different species of Grosbeaks in North America. In New Mexico this bird favors the high mountains that have aspens and mixed conifers. These flocks are scattered across middle North America, and are recovering from a serious population decline thought to be caused by chemical budworm treatments carried out in Canadian forests that they frequent. Up here (8600 ft msl) they are seasonally regular... but not predictable. This cooler high-altitude region is near the southern extent mapped for the species

mapping Edinburgh in the style of Ordnance Survey maps from the early 20th century, using contemporary OpenStreetMap data.

Inspired by the wonderful georeferenced maps from the National Library of Scotland, in particular the early 1900s Ordnance Survey Maps.

Using QGIS 2.18. The hardest part is the street labelling and typography. Edinburgh is mapped in great detail in OSM; I had to reduce the detail and shrink the building outlines to get the feel of the originals.

Added a bit of grunge using blending mode, transparency, and a texture (a photo of a plaster wall I took during house renovation)

Reminiscing by looking at a Flickr map... What wonderful stories this map of lower Manhattan and its surroundings brings back to me...

I really need the next wider view to really cover my beginnings. I lived, worked, or studied in all the five boroughs of New York City: Staten Island, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and The Bronx. This map shows only small parts of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.
