Butterfly on thistle

'Map butterfly' shows his awesome wings

Landkärtchen auf einer Distel

I never much cared for this unit once it was painted up in this scheme. Just about everything WC did turned to gold in my mind except for this beast. The flag unit was much nicer in my opinion but anyway here is 3026 leading 7510 on the OACTI at Soo Yard on February 22, 2001.

Going retro with this shot. This is my first compass. It's an official BSA Silva Pathfinder compass I got when I was a Cub Scout about 1958. The Mineral King quad topographic map shown here is not quite as old. It was printed in 1973, but it is based on 1955 aerial surveys and 1956 field checking of the region.

The summer variety looks very different, see 2nd comment/previous upload.

- You may stare at that map for as long as you want, but, here, read my lips: We! Are! Lost! Can't you at least admit it, trooper?

- *sigh*

This is a map butterfly (Araschnia levana) in summer colors.

Taken with Sony A-6000 (Sony ILCE-6000) and SEL FE90M28G Macro as RAW. Converted to JPEG with LR 5.7

HMM!

Melting Ice, as a world map. Kind of a prediction...

Could this be an ancient map of the world? Some of the continents are correct but not all are shown.

For the past little bit I have been working on a series of short audio-slideshows featuring 70 profiles of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Newfoundland and Labrador joined Canadian confederation 70 years ago and I thought it would be interesting to talk a snapshot of the province at this moment in time. I am working with a producer and we are trying to match demographic, geographic and occupational data across the episodes in order to reflect as much of the province as we possibly can.

This card is very beautiful! I love it!

Thank you s_vlm, for all those beautiful postcards! :)

I saw several map butterflies yesterday on the meadows near a lake. The map butterflies of the summer generation which are around now, are much darker then those of the spring generation.

Of Plan(e)t Pitting

Plan(e)t Pitting is an only recently discovered planet in our solar system. It's gashed surface with many deep lakes has been formed by heavy volcanic activity of the Apodemus sylvaticus (I assume; the exact origin of the volcanic activity has not been clarified, yet) which, for now, has come to a rest, but for how long, I wonder...

Close-up and extreme crop of what must have been a very yummy leaf. It reminded me of one of those "Earth from Above" (do you know the books by Yann Arthus-Bertrand?), or Earth from space captures, especially after processing (and I have no idea where the blue comes from, but it must have been there; it appeared when I removed the haze in LR), and cropping. It's not sharp all over, unfortunately; taking pictures in the forest yesterday was rather difficult, because it was windy, and halfway through we had to return to "civilisation" in great haste, because a heavy downpour started (we'd just made it to a nearby Café). Couldn't decide between a tiny lichen "trumpet", a lime leaf with nail gall mites on it, and this one. In the end the rather surreal leaf won.

A Happy Macro Monday, Everyone!

Macro Mondays: #AllNatural

oh noes tomorrow i have a meeting at the JR railpass corner in Tokyo station. finding the specific place on the map doesn't really make me not worry. halp.

A map I drew for a story I'm writing. I thought adding the real compass made it more interesting.

The walls are thick with mosses with all the damp, and even as a child I thought they looked like maps.

Now, with images from Google Earth in full colour, They are even more like views from above.

Marcopolo Paradiso G7 1800 DD - Scania K440IB 8x2

An old map measurer wheel (just looked this up on Mr Google to see if there was a proper name for it, but disappointingly there doesn't seem to be one) that must be over 60 years old so I call that ancient! My Dad used to love using it and it came with us on every holiday in the UK.
