This is a trend with the concept that distance will no longer be a cost in communicating long distances. This is true in online social medias because you do not have to pay a high cost to speak to someone in a different country anymore because of these.
Apparently these highway planners failed to realize that a road needs to be continuous in order for it to be useful.
