While looking for directions to Broxburn Academy for this weekend, I appear to have stumbled on to this.
Okay, so the map didn't load when the zoom scale changed.
Displacement maps are psd files with a texture. The light and dark values are used to modify text or images so that they appear to be embedded in the texture. The filter to modify the text is Distort>displace. The displacement map has to be the same size as the file being modified and it has to be a psd file (not jpg).

Farmers showed interest in the southeastern corner, especially in land along the Missouri. Land companies from Dubuque, Iowa, and St. Paul, Minnesota founded rival cities Sioux Falls and Sioux Falls City on the Big Sioux River in 1857. But Yankton, founded a year later, became the first hub of territory business. Map of Dakota, 1855.

One technique detects high energy particles through their interaction with water placed in surface detector tanks. The other technique tracks the development of air showers by observing ultraviolet light emitted high in the Earth's atmosphere.

I admit, I piggybacked on the wildly popular idea of using old maps in art and craft. I don't know who started it, but I like it. I have always loved maps, and spent just as much time reading my school atlas as I did my favorite novels.
