we caught an 8ft+ wide manta ray this morning. i can't tell you how rare this is. i'm still giddy. a marine biologist's dream. photo credit: francis y.
This man is proudly showing us the Mantarays he fished for in the morning. The only saving grace of being a fisherman is that if you can get fishing line and a hook your family won't starve. A fisherman makes about 200 rupees a day. Around $2.

We stayed at Mantaray last year. it is well situated and good snorkelling off the beach but lacked a good atmosphere.
seeing Manta Rays was the highlight of the trip for just about everybody. The dive site is a known "cleaning station" for mantas, so if you look carefully you can see the cleaner fish latched on to the mantas. I tried to include fellow divers in some of the shots to give you a sense of scale - the mantas had a wingspan of approx. 15 feet. AWESOME!
