The manta ray is most commonly found in the warmer, tropical of waters of the world's oceans, typically around coral reefs and along the continental shelves where food is in abundance. However, due to their enormous size, manta rays are also commonly spotted hunting out in the open ocean.

Seen not far from Hulls award winning Aquarium "The Deep" this artwork depicts the "Manta Ray..

Manta rays are found in tropical and warm temperate coastal regions of the world's oceans, generally between 35 degrees north and south latitude, including the coasts of southern Africa, ranging from southern California to northern Peru, North Carolina to southern Brazil, and the Gulf of Mexico.

To celebrate World Oceans Day I decided to revisit the highlight dive of my Maldives dive trip in 2018. This Manta ray was at a cleaning station. Such an awesome sight and so huge.

We snorkelled with a Manta Ray in Moorea, French Polynesia & bought this wooden beauty as a reminder in the neighbouring island of Raitea.

Looking Close... on Friday: Not a real one

Mandalay - the U-Bein bridge is crossing the Taungthaman Lake. After the rainy season, this shallow lake is almost completely drying up - currently only half of the bridge is on the water. Local farmers are starting to cultivate the newly emerged lands.

Happy Manta Monday!

It has been too long since I have done a manta night dive considering that was my calling for 8 years when I moved to Hawaii. Big Mahalo to my friends that said "let's do a shore dive for the manta rays." It was perfect.

A rework of an earlier shot of the Mantaray artwork at Nipton California.

I passed by this fantastic Bisti formation many times but never quite figured out how to shoot it. It sits quite low and is difficult to declutter from the surroundings. Here is an idea executed by getting higher long after sunset to obtain a better contrast of the brownish hoodoo and its mushroom-like curled up hat (with a hole!) against cracked up purple-green clay. Manta Ray floats away into the night.

Tangalle (Sri Lanka) - A scene that is not easy to photograph when you have not yet digested your breakfast.

I came three mornings in a row to the port of Tangalle to do a series on fishermen. And a mini-report on this profession is not conceivable without fish. I have done dozens of reports at sea on French trawlers, but the fish as soon as they came out of the nets were stored in the holds, then landed more or less alive at the dock. There I did not expect to see a huge manta ray cut with a machete at the foot of the boat. After this series of photos, I haven't eaten any fish for three months. I now know that the day I want to become a vegetarian, all I have to do is go take a picture of a slaughterhouse. But today, European slaughterhouses deny journalists access.

This is another first in my life. Manta Rays in the wild (or ocean....lol) Returning from Isla Espiritu Santo, suddenly we were aware of some fish jumping in the water around us. Imagine our excitement when we learned that they were Manta Rays!
