Direct Relief's Senior Program Manager, Lindsey Pollaczek, sent this picture while on her trip in Somaliland:

Sado is overcome with emotion when she is asked what Edna means to her—“She is like my mother,” she says. The remarkable Edna Adan, a woman with over five decades of midwifery experience and a fierce passion for instilling knowledge in young people, wraps her arm around Sado's shoulder. “At my age you have to pass the torch, and I choose to pass it to them,” Edna says. “You have no idea how many lives she has saved, and this is why I continue to do what I do.”

This one is for my Chinese friends. Here is a member of the Chinese diaspora in Russia. It's one of two shots of Chinese people in all of the 2,000 photos that SPG shot, or rather, those are the only two that survive. Taken between 1905 and 1915, according to LOC, but my guess is around 1912.

The LOC title is – "Tea factory in Chakva. Chinese foreman Lau-Dzhen-Dzhau."

What SPG identifies as Chavka, Temples.ru says is now called Chavki, and you can find it on Google Earth in the Republic of Georgia. Close by, that is slightly north and west of this location, are hills apparently still covered with tea plantings. I suspect that Chavka was originally just the name of the mansion and the estate, and that over the course of the twentieth century, a small town grew up around the tea plantations. But this is all guesswork. Another picture taken by SPG – and I have placed a copy next after this shot – is titled, "Lau-Dzhen-Dzhau's house," and it is a mansion, viewed through an arcade of trees, and overlooking the sea.

According to Wikipedia (citing the Great Russian Encyclopedia – which is online, but not, alas, in English), industrial tea production began in 1885, so it's quite possible that, a mere 30 or so years later, production was still expanding, new plantations still being established. Then as now, Russians drink lots of tea, so we can assume an expanding market, so long as the home-grown product can compete with imports in point of price. In the same SPG album are pictures of various phases of tea production, including some shots of the (mostly female) pickers, and cases of packed tea, and what looks like a tea-mixing and tasting station inside the factory.

So here is Lau Dzhen-Dzhau, a middle-aged guy, an expert tea plantation manager, imported from China to assist in getting the factory at Chavka up and running. He looks to be closing in on forty, so perhaps born around 1872-75, and now firmly settled in mid-career. He wears what I at first thought was one of the ubiquitous service medals handed out by the Tsarist government, but after poking around on the internet, it's clear that this is no ordinary award. For one thing, it's not a medal at all, but a cross, and an internet search shows that what it most closely resembles is the Order of St Stanislaus (second class). These were generally given out to civil servants. It's a red-ish-purple-ish cross, with gold infilling between the arms, and a circular tablet (alas, unreadable) at the centre. Both St Staislaus and St Anna had four classes of award, as well as both military and civilian versions; the military versions were distinguished by diagonally crossed swords, which Lau's award lacks, meaning it is a civilian award. The point is, that this is a prestigious thing, leading me to think that Lau is perhaps a fairly highly placed – or at the very least, highly thought of – addition to the Imperial Civil Service. Which in turn might mean that government money was part of the funding for the Chavka plantation, encouraging industry, Russian economic autarky, that sort of thing. Would that be a Stolypin kind of thing to do? Perhaps.

Note that Lau's clothes are probably not the ones he wears to do his daily work. Both pants and jacket have clear fold lines in them, that is, they have been stashed in a drawer somewhere for a considerable time, and only brought out to have his picture taken. The pants appear quite rough, probably duck cotton, and the jacket looks like a "chinese" one, quilted, perhaps, and with a high collar that seems to be somewhat of an uncomfortable fit for Lau around his neck, so once again, this is SPG making sure his subjects express their "proper" ethnicity. The boots however, their shine testifying perhaps to the excellence of Lau's servants, look pure Russian to me, so I would think that Lau would look quite different should you pass him on the seafront at Batumi, taking the evening air, watching the sun go down.

And of course, like most of SPG's subjects, we know nothing of his past or his future. Did he manage to get out of Batumi before the revolution, only to end up in China just as it too, began to disintegrate? Maybe, before the war, before the Revolution, Russia looked more stable than China, which had been in turmoil since at least the mid-1890s; a nice place to raise your kids, perhaps.

The plants around him are a combination of young bushes newly planted and bushes that might soon be ready to harvest, though I can't say for sure, since I have no idea how bushy a tea bush must be to be pickable.

This past weekend the Cariboo Cougars clinched first place in the BCMML with two consecutive wins over the third place ranked Rockets in hard fought home games and the Cougars will not have to leave Prince George for the rest of the season.

This season has been one filled with milestones and will certainly be one for the record books.

The Cats finished the 2016/17 season with their best record in franchise history at 34-5-1.

A season that included a dominant appearance at the Mac’s Tournament in Calgary, where Myles Mattila received the Committee Scholarship.

Zach Wickson finished the season with an impressive record of 16-3-0 while collecting a 1.70 Goals Against Average, the best in that stat column.

More icing on the cake was watching Daine Dubois finish on top of league scoring for the second straight year with 27 goals and 40 assists.

Those are only a few highlights on the #RoadToTelusCup, and now a team that has dominated the league takes aim at the BCMML title.

The playoffs begin this Friday as the Cougars will host the Kootenay Ice as they make their first post season appearance in their 11 year franchise history. The Cougars dominated the season series winning all four games skating away with a 32-3 goal differential.

Not sure why I've never uploaded this before, but I thought it might be neat to show off the css Zen Garden manager tool thingy I built years ago.

As annotated, there have been some growing pains. If this were a commercial project it might be time for a redesign.

Most important thing I learned from this: even if you're developing for an insanely ultra-controlled environment (like an audience of one), cross-browser testing is still important.

Anger Management anyone?

John in one of his acting moments...the man is an actor...give him credit people!

Lake Louise was named after the daughter of Queen Victoria, Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, in 1884. The general manager of the Canadian Pacific Railway, Cornelius Van Horne, built the original Chalet Lake Louise - a one-story log cabin on the shore of Lake Louise in 1890. It contained a a dining room, bar and two small bedrooms, It had large windows facing the lake and a verandah. The Chalet Lake Louise hosted visitors from the railway line as well as day visitors from its elegant sister, the Banff Springs Hotel. Following fires and four architects, the small, summer cabin would evolve to become the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.

Due to gas rationing Chateau Lake Louise was closed to the public during WWII. During the war the lake and surrounding facilities were used to develop "Pykrete," a difficult to break and slow to melt mixture of wood pulp and ice that was part of the creation of floating ice platforms for equipment transport.

Lake Louise is acknowleged as the birthplace of Canadian mountaineering. Between 1899 and 1954, generations of Swiss mountaineers hired by Canadian Pacific taught thousands of visitors and locals to climb and, later, to ski. Canadian Pacific Swiss guides were responsible for over 250 first ascents in these mountains, most of them in the company of hotel guests. From fondues to hikes, the Swiss influence on architecture and cuisine can still be felt at the Chateau Lake Louise today.

Although they were conceived as summer-only resorts, the Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise opened for skiers during the peak winter holiday seasons of the 1970s, breathing new life into both luxury hotels. A decade later the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics would showcase Banff National Park's ski resorts to the world. Average annual snowfall is about 30 feet. The emarald color of Lake Louise is due to tiny mineral deposits of glacial silt or rock flower, carried down from the Lower Victoria Glacier. The hotel is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Louise facing the Victoria Glacier. The surrounding mountains include Mount Victoria, Mount Lefroy, Mount Aberdeen, Mount Temple, Mount Beehive, Mount Whyte and Mount St. Piran.

In 1986 the hotel received $65 million worth of upgrades.

French-based hotel chain, Accorhotels SA, paid $3 billion to acquire the luxury Fairmont, Raffles and Swissotel brands from Oxford Properties, the real estate arm of the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System and investment companies - Qatar Investment Authority and Kingdom Holding Company of Saudi Arabia. The deal completed in 2015 included the Chateau Lake Louise, Jasper Park Lodge and the Banff Springs Hotel and ohter Fairmont Hotels.

Jürgen Norbert Klopp, born 16 June 1967 is a German professional football manager and former player who is the manager of Premier League club Liverpool. He is widely regarded as one of the best managers in the world.

Klopp spent most of his playing career at Mainz 05. He was initially deployed as a striker, but was later moved to defence. Upon retiring in 2001, Klopp became the club's manager, and secured Bundesliga promotion in 2004. After suffering relegation in the 2006–07 season and unable to achieve promotion, Klopp resigned in 2008 as the club's longest-serving manager. He then became manager of Borussia Dortmund, guiding them to the Bundesliga title in 2010–11, before winning Dortmund's first-ever domestic double during a record-breaking season. Klopp also guided Dortmund to a runner-up finish in the 2012–13 UEFA Champions League before leaving in 2015 as their longest-serving manager.

Klopp was appointed manager of Borussia Dortmund He guided the club to successive UEFA Champions League finals in 2018 and 2019, winning the latter to secure his first – and Liverpool's sixth – title in the competition. Klopp's side finished second in the 2018–19 Premier League, registering 97 points; the then third-highest total in the history of the English top division, and the most by a team without winning the title. The following season, Klopp won the UEFA Super Cup and Liverpool's first FIFA Club World Cup, before delivering Liverpool's first Premier League title, amassing a club record 99 points and breaking a number of top-flight records. These achievements won him back-to-back FIFA Coach of the Year awards in 2019 and 2020.

Klopp is a notable proponent of Gegenpressing, whereby the team, after losing possession, immediately attempts to win back possession, rather than falling back to regroup. He has described his sides as playing "heavy metal" football, in reference to their pressing and high attacking output. Klopp has cited his main influences as Italian coach Arrigo Sacchi, and former Mainz coach Wolfgang Frank. The importance of emotion is something Klopp has underlined throughout his managerial career, and he has gained notoriety for his enthusiastic touchline celebrations.
