Porthmadog Harbour railway station, the terminus of both the Ffestiniog Railway and Welsh Highland Railway, Porthmadog, Gwynedd, North Wales.

The Station is the head office and operational headquarters of the Festiniog Railway Company, marketed as Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways.

The station is built at the western end of the Cob, the great embankment across the Traeth Mawr, on a peninsula from Ynys Madoc constructed in 1842 to form a slate wharf and a harbour wall. It was opened for passenger service on 6 January 1865. Welsh Highland Railway trains served the station from 1923, but these ceased running in 1936.

The station was closed to passengers on 15 September 1939, although slate trains continued operating through the Second World War until 1946. The buildings continued in use as the principal offices of the Festiniog Railway Company and the home of Manager (Mr Robert Evans) including throughout the years of almost total closure from 1 August 1946 to 24 September 1954. The station reopened for passengers on 23 July 1955. Welsh Highland Railway services were restored in 2011.

The present stone buildings, replacing earlier wooden buildings dismantled and reused elsewhere on the railway, date from 1878/79 and the goods shed was added in 1880. They were linked to the former goods shed by way of a major extension in 1975. Passenger facilities include a booking and enquiry office, a large tourist and hobby shop and a large cafeteria with licensed bar. The erection of the platform awning was completed in 1988.

With the resumption of services in 1955, all traffic on the line has been controlled from an office in Harbour station, known simply as "Control". Except for some early morning and late-night movements by works trains, this office is manned constantly when passenger-carrying services are in operation. Its remit was expanded in 1997 with the commencement of public services on the Welsh Highland Railway between Caernarfon and Dinas and its subsequent expansion south towards Porthmadog.

So I spot this guy from a distance. Figure him as an old hippie. Or maybe a retired sailor who will tell me that "I have sailed the seven seas, and here's my story". Not at all. This is Oscar Ian Borgström. He was waiting for his bus at Port 73 in Handen earlier today when I asked him if I could snap a few portraits with my new Chinese lens. I told him that it was the combination of a few things that made me want to take his photo. The big white beard, the deep tan, the sunglasses and of course the Hawaiian shirt. Turns out Oscar wasn't the old hippie I took him for. And he didn't sail the seven seas, and he never visited Hawaii. He is a former IT manager! And the closest thing to a hippie life in California was a trip to Nevada for a computer and electronics fair in Las Vegas back in the day. I'm sure Oscar could have told me a few interesting stories from his life, but just as I took up my notebook his bus home to Jordbro arrived.

4 Animation - COMING SOON

Despite all the "coming soon" signs plastered on the front sporting the new logo and color scheme prior to opening, what little interior signage there was (and there was very, very little of it!) for opening weekend itself was of the red and yellow style. The associates all working in the store (including both "managers" Retail Retell and I have discussed seeing in the past) all were wearing the red "bird logo" t-shirts as well. I'm guessing at this point the new logo and such won't be officially unveiled until early 2017.

UPDATE: the Tuesday Morning website has finally switched over to the new logo, which is kind of cool, since everyone agrees that logo is nice and refreshingly retro-feeling. Sadly however, that also means the unique bird logo has now been retired as well, or will soon be making it's exit :(

Foundation and piling specialists Roger Bulllivant Ltd. operate this October 2012 registered Scania R560 pulling a Nooteboom 3-axle low-loader carrying their own designed and manufactured - Roger Bullivant - RB 5022 driven piling rig, the latest of 14 similar types operated. Pictured at Lymm Services, Cheshire on 21st April, 2016.

Chris Hibbert - Plant Design Manager at Roger Bullivant Ltd., makes the following comment on the RB 5022 rig:-

"The RB 5022 It is based on a CAT 320C excavator and we then add our own boom, mast and hammer assembly. The hammer assembly has a 5.5t moving weight inside the steel shell which can lifted and dropped via an internally mounted hydraulic cylinder from a variety of drop heights which are electronically selected. These machines are used to drive sectional concrete or steel piles into the ground which can be connected on top of each other until the required depth or resistance is obtained."

My thanks to Gary Farnell - Managing Director and to Chris Hibbert - Plant Design Manager at Roger Bullivant Ltd. for providing details about their specialist plant.

Rosebank.

The first white men to traverse the district were overlanders with flocks of sheep or cattle from NSW. One of their routes was to cross the Murray near Blanchetown and drive their flocks up the Marne River valley and into the Adelaide Hills. The first lessee of the district was George Melrose who took out a leasehold circa 1842. He established his homestead at Rosebank, east of Mt Pleasant in that year with his leasehold covering much of the land east of Mt Pleasant to the South Rhine (now Marne) River. He explored parts of SA for an outback station and liked the Lake Victoria country north of Renmark. When he married Euphemia Thomson in 1847 he took her to Lake Victoria for their honeymoon and she was the first white woman to visit such country. He probably had a simple cottage in the early years before he built a grand stone homestead at Rosebank around 1858. He acquired more runs in the north of SA, at Lake Victoria and at Franklin Harbour and Ulooloo. At a later stage in 1904 he built a grand stone shearing shed which is now heritage listed. He was undoubtedly a good employer for his workmen stayed for decades. Eight of his employees worked for him for between 30 and 50 years. George Melrose senior died at Rosebank in 1894 at the age of 87 years. He had had thirteen children. The Rosebank run, then freehold land was inherited by his third son Robert T. Melrose (1862-1945) who was born at Rosebank and managed it from 1896 until 1945. One of George and Euphemia’s daughters Elisabeth Melrose (1853 – 1945) married John Murray and they had a son named Sir John Stanley Murray. This grandson of George Melrose took over the property in 1946 after acquiring it from two of his uncles and he managed it until 1971. Sir John Stanley Murray (1884-1971) who was born on 27 March 1884 at Rosebank lived on the property and his managers were responsible for its development as a leading Aberdeen Angus stud. Sir John Stanley Murray’s daughter Alison Melrose Murray married Ian McLachlan (1908-1995) in June 1936. The three families of Melrose, Murray and McLachlan all have prominent headstones in the Mt Pleasant and Mt Crawford cemeteries. After Sir John Murray’s death in 1971 Rosebank passed to Angas McLachlan a son of Alison and Ian McLachlan who was born in 1944. His brother Ian, born in 1936 was the federal MP and Cabinet Minister in federal parliament from 1990 to 1998. The McLachlans purchased the Springfield House and estate near Williamstown in 1957. This historic house, Springfield House was built in 1841 for John Warren who took up land there circa 1840. Back at Rosebank in 2018 Will McLachlan and his family moved into the main house and took up the management role of the estate. Among the buildings on the property are accommodation cottages and the 1904 woolshed. At its peak 27,000 sheep a year were shorn in this shearing shed. Rosebank is still a Merino stud and its flock came from the Murray Merino bred by their relatives. Rosebank is also known for its beef production.

After 20 years of performing the same material – "I think I carried it to a ridiculous degree" - John hooked up again with his old mate, Blue Orchids founder and ex Fall and Nico guitarist, Ricky Goldshaw, who originally got him onto the punk circuit. He's now handling John's affairs and things have started to move forward again. It's like the fun's coming back. Just before Joe Strummer died they were touring with the Mescalaros, and John's recently supported The Fall and been a compere for Chuck Berry, of all people, in Spain.

Members of the launch party of the cargo ship 'Highcliffe' at the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons, South Shields, 10 September 1927 (TWAM ref. DS.RDD/4/PH/1/486/1).

This set celebrates the achievements of the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons. The firm has played a significant role in the North East’s illustrious shipbuilding history and the development of South Shields.

The company began in 1865 when John Readhead, a shipyard manager, entered into business with J Softley at a small yard on the Lawe at South Shields. Following the dissolution of the partnership in 1872, it continued as John Readhead & Co on the same site until 1880 when the High West Yard was purchased. After Readhead’s four sons were taken into the business in 1888 the company traded as John Readhead & Sons becoming a limited company in 1908. In 1968 the company was absorbed by the Swan Hunter Group and in 1977 became part of the nationalised British Shipbuilders. In the same year the last vessel was launched and the site was sold off in 1984.

Readheads was prolific and built over 600 ships from 1865 to 1968, including 87 vessels for the Hain Steamship Company Ltd and over forty for the Strick Line Ltd. The shipyard also built four ships for the Prince Line, founded by Sir James Knott. The firm built vessels, which were involved in the major conflicts of the Twentieth Century. During the First World War they built patrol vessels and ‘x’ lighters (motor landing craft used in the Gallipoli campaign) for the Admiralty. During the Second World War the firm built tankers for the Normandy Landings.

In June 1924, at a meeting of key Leica managers, Ernst Leitz took the decision to manufacture 'Barnack's Camera'. So started the long line of Leica cameras. The latest rangefinders are the M11s and now I've succumbed and bought one. The camera I've photographed with it is the last of the screw thread Leicas, the IIIG introduced in 1958. The town scene is of course Chesterfield. I haven't really used the camera in anger but I'm pleased with the results, the versatility, the ergonomics and quality of the camera.

Just a quick not to everyone! I’ll leave the comments on for this shot, but will not be around for comments! I am going to try to limit my activity on Flickr today as I am having a lot of pain in my shoulder today! I’m going to have to quit my night-time job as a Roman gladiator in my dreams and see it that helps the pain any! Pretty bad when you hurt yourself while you are sleeping! Hope everyone is doing well! Warm regards to all! Great Egret taken on Horsepen Bayou!

Really no need to comment! I"ll be fine!
