I managed to take a walk today, a day a bit 'more "warm" than the previous ones.
I did not have the "official" camera with me because I wanted to be free of weight and photographic obligations.
I wanted to enjoy the walk and I found myself, instead, taking a lot of photos of the fascinating river and the path in winter clothes.
This small nikon compact, now dated, is able to capture the "mood" of the environment, probably better than the other, has no claims in detail, all that immortal is what I needed today- the essence of the river in winter, in its apparent calm, in the dull colors, in the bony trees and in the total absence of living beings of all kinds....
Fabrizio De André - Le acciughe fanno il pallone (Live)
The chosen music has nothing to do with the photo, but is a tribute to De André in the twenty years since his death and a tribute to my father on his birthday ....
Thanks for your recent visits, favorites, comments and invitations, everything is very much appreciated, as always....

I managed to take my long lens out for a while this morning and was lucky to find this beautifully marked Black tailed Godwit from Firth hide Dungeness RSPB (it is the closest hide on the trail from the car park ) . Thank you for all your good wishes and kindness I still cannot walk far but this is a good start to my recovery .
Managed to get up close to a family of Canada geese close to the shore of Shearwater Lake on the edge of Wiltshire's Longleat estate.
Managed to get up in the mountains just before peak leaf turn this year. The aspens dance year round, but their colors in the fall are add to their performance.
We drove down to Denali National Park and Wilderness Preserve on Sunday, Mother's Day. What was intended to be a relaxing day was anything but. We should have known better than to go yesterday, but we went anyways.
Normally, we stay away from Denali during tourist season because of the crowds. We prefer going where no one goes, but we do venture down to the Park in off season.
We seen the usual, moose and caribou, and there were a few people stopped to watch them. We went further on and there was a traffic jam, maybe 15 cars parked watching a bear on the hill. It wouldn't have been so bad if the people parked their cars on the side of the road, but no, in their haste and excitement, they parked their brains in their sphincter and not only parked in the middle of the road, but left their car doors open. It took us a few minutes to get through the congestion, and we parked along the side of the road a few hundred yards down the road. It was pathetic to watch, cars were hopscotching down the road, following the bear. The poor bear was on a hill and wanted to cross the road, but the cars would not let him.
Finally, the bear was right out our window looking at us, I snapped a few photos, this being one of them, then the cars and foot traffic surrounded us.
It took us another five or so minutes to get out of the jam again, we turned around where we could and waited, soon the traffic all passed us, so we knew the bear was out of sight. We left the park, disgusted at the people who park their brains when the see wildlife.
We may try Denali again on a weekday, but we have other places to go where no one goes.
I still can't hike like I used too before I got sick, but we did manage a small hike at another spot on the way home.
Male greater prairie chickens (Tympanuchus cupido) of the grouse family (Phasianidae) vying for dominance in the mating lek in a managed prairie in south-central Illinois.
Once common on the Great Plains, the population of the greater prairie chicken has sharply declined due to the conversion of natural prairies to agricultural land. With the population still in decline, the species is considered vulnerable. Numerous initiatives are attempting to provide suitable habitat and stimulate population growth. The birds in this shot are from such an initiative in south-central Illinois.

Managed to get one really clear photo of this cat. It was hiding in some heavy shadow.
This came in joint 3rd place in the Planet Earth Animals & Bird Group contest in April 2019.

I didn't manage to take a single shot of Skovtårnet. This photo is stiched together by 5 photos.
That is because the forest tower is located in the middle of Gisselfeld's forests. The experience already starts when you first step onto the 3,2 kilometer long raised footpath, which meanders through the forest, around the trees and over the streams, until the Skovtårnet suddenly fades into view between the trees.
Suddenly you stand in front of a 45 meter high tower.
The iconic architecture of the Forest Tower is inextricably linked to the hourglass shape, which is drawn from a cylindrical shape, where the bottom and top are maximized, while the middle is laced into a so-called hyperboloid shape. This narrowing in the middle of the construction is important for the experience in Forest Tower, as you get very close to three beautiful beech trees, which grow in the middle of the structure.
Managed to find a place to take this pic above the street in a nearby park. This located in Arlington, VA. I was trying to hit the blue hour and get the LE light trails. Got some minor ghosting affects too in there.
I managed to get a clear shot after a lengthy approach to this juvenile Coopers Hawk. Lots of branches in front of it so by the time I got a clear shot I was much closer than I wanted and had to take it vertically at 700mm, so this is the entire frame. The bird had been eating a small bird just prior, and you can see some of the feathers on the perch just to the right of the hawk. They are more likely to tolerate your presence if they are eating and if you don't make a direct approach.....He/she was still there when I left but was gone 5 minutes later....

Managed out last weekend on a trip to Perthshire, Full Autumn colours are not there yet but was so nice finding new places, This was taken on the way back to my car where the sun was breaking through the forest to light up this ancient old oak tree in amongst the conifers.

managed to find the shrike at santon this time round and plenty of good perched shots but this was my favourite shot of the day I was waiting for a train to come past as it spooked the shrike every time
I finally managed to get a shot of the Langet Cave which leads out to Bow Fiddle Rock, near Portknockie, on the Moray Firth in Scotland. This is always a tricky shot due to a number of factors. The level of water has to be right, the waves have to be strong enough but not too big, there has to be enough ambient light to get into the cave but not too strong outside. Even when all of this works, you still have to exposure blend in order to get enough detail both inside and outside the cave. I really feel that I got the shot I have been hoping to get for some time.
Managed to get this quick snap of Dumbo the dog leaving Sloane Squae Station.

Very pleased to see some Linnets appearing in the garden.
I have seen a male but so far only managed to photograph this female.
In this difficult time when nothing is as it usually is, watching the birds in the garden carrying on their normal lives is a huge boost.
I managed a bit of sketching and 1 shot on the Bronica on some HP5+. Felt rubbish from the flu jab and when sun went in I headed home. Had a few hours technical issue to sort out for someone by which time the last few hours were sunny again
This Green Heron made a sudden appearance, and I managed it catch it as it rose to land in a high branch close to where I was standing. (Wakodahatchee Wetlands) Greenies, as I like to call them, have a lot of personality. They have a wide range of vocalizations, often chase each other around, like to fish from a branch above the surface of the water, and have that slinky-like neck that can scrunch down or stretch way out, and can raise the feathers on their head like a crown. As juveniles, they are ridiculously cute, with the emphasis on ridiculous. I hope to get some of those this nesting season.
As some of you know, I keep a list of Sony shooters and share information that may be useful to them. I also send descriptions like this one to another list of people who have asked me to share my work with them in that fashion. I’m happy to add anyone who wishes to either list.

Managed to get down the coast for the sunrise. The tide seemed very high this morning, could not get on to the beach.
'Twas back in March that I managed to find a break in the weather whilst over t'other side of the water and popped down to Portwrinkle, the tide was on it's way in and the sun was setting so I thought I would see if I could grab a pic to while away the rest of what had been a rather inclement day.

I managed a bit of time out in the garden this afternoon, before it clouded over and got nippy.
Just enough time to catch one of our Collared Doves visiting.

Happy Fence Friday
This was the view from my hotel room. I called to make my reservation and I asked for an ocean view and the girl was so rude. She said, Well, you'll have to be on the second floor. I thought of a couple of things to say but I just, OK. There wasn't an elevator but we still
managed. Also, in this shot, you can see the bad weather I was telling you about.

After managing to drag ourselves away from the beach at The Bluff the Famous Flickr Five headed to another seaside location and had a delicious lunch at 'At The Heads' where we dined at another picturesque location on the waters edge.
Pictured here is a combination of Margaret's lunch and Beverley's drink . . . both who kindly refrained so I could take these two shots before they indulged . . . the bright oranges instantly catching my eye!

No Foundation!
Hawa Mahal is the tallest building in the world without a foundation. The five-storey building managed to maintain upright because of it is curved. Just another masterpiece of Rajput and Mughal architecture.
Durga Puja pandal architecture is a vibrant and dynamic art form, deeply rooted in Bengali tradition but continuously evolving with contemporary trends. The pandal serves as the temporary abode for the goddess Durga during the annual festival and is often an elaborate and creative expression of architectural ingenuity.
Materials Used
Bamboo: The traditional material used for the structure of the pandal, which is highly flexible and abundant.
Cloth and Paper: These are used for decorations, draping, and wall coverings. They are often painted or printed with intricate designs.
Plaster of Paris and Clay: Used for creating idols and sculptures.
Fiberglass and Metal: These are often used in modern pandals for creating stronger, more durable structures.
1. Traditional Designs
Bengali Folk Art: Traditional pandals often draw from rural Bengal’s heritage, incorporating local materials like bamboo, jute, and clay. These pandals typically feature motifs inspired by nature, mythology, and folk art.
Sholar Kaaj: This is a technique involving intricate designs made from shola (a type of plant) and is used to create ornaments, canopies, and decorations within the pandal.
Terracotta and Wooden Crafts: Terracotta sculptures, wooden carvings, and images of mythological figures are common in older pandals.
2. Modern Interpretations
Innovative Materials: Modern pandals often use contemporary materials like fiberglass, metal, and plastic alongside traditional materials. For instance, large fiberglass idols of Durga are increasingly used, along with innovative lighting, mirrors, and glasswork.
Thematic Pandals: Many pandals these days are built around a specific theme. The themes can range from environmental issues (like conservation of rivers or wildlife) to technological advancements, historical events, or even popular culture. The architecture of the pandal is designed to reflect this theme, often incorporating multimedia elements.
Eco-friendly Designs: In recent years, there has been a push for sustainable and eco-friendly pandals. These are often constructed using biodegradable materials such as bamboo, paper, and cloth, with designs that minimize environmental impact.
3. Architectural Features
Structural Form: Traditionally, pandals were dome-shaped or cylindrical, but now they can take on all sorts of avant-garde shapes, from temples to spaceships to replicas of famous monuments like the Eiffel Tower or the Taj Mahal.
Facade and Entrances: The entrance of the pandal is often grand and acts as a focal point of the design. It may incorporate arches, columns, and ornate carvings, often reflecting the temple architecture of India.
Ceilings and Roofs: The roofs of pandals are a key area for artistic expression, ranging from elaborate canopies made of flowers to highly stylized, often abstract, designs using light and color.
Lighting: Pandals are spectacularly lit, with millions of light bulbs strung up in intricate patterns. The lighting not only enhances the aesthetics but also creates a divine ambiance, especially at night.
Interior Layout: The interior of the pandal is designed to accommodate the idol of Durga, with a focus on creating a spiritual environment. The idol is often placed on a raised platform, surrounded by artistic depictions of various deities, animals, and scenes from mythology.
4. Regional Variations
Kolkata Pandals: In Kolkata, Durga Puja pandals are known for their immense creativity and often become larger-than-life structures. Famous areas like Kumartuli, Behala, and Santoshpur are known for their extravagant pandals.
Delhi and Other Urban Centers: Pandal designs in metropolitan areas might incorporate modern styles, influenced by international trends, such as futuristic designs, art installations, or replicas of foreign monuments. These pandals often blend cultural elements with urban sophistication.
Rural and Smaller Town Pandals: These tend to have simpler, more rustic designs but are rich in cultural symbolism. Often constructed with bamboo, they may showcase more traditional and handcrafted artworks.
5. Innovative and Avant-Garde Designs
Optical Illusions: Some pandals are designed to give the illusion of floating structures, using materials like mirrors and lights to create mesmerizing visual effects.
Interactive and Immersive Designs: Some pandals now aim to create immersive experiences. Visitors can walk through installations that engage all their senses, with sounds, lights, and even augmented reality elements enhancing the experience.
6. Famous Pandals and Their Architects
Kumartuli Park (Kolkata): Known for its amazing artistry!
Managed to get this pano using my light travel tripod - certainly isn't as stable as my main one! From Rangiwahia Hut Lookout looking towards Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe. Morning sun just starting to kiss the hill tops...
Managed to sneak out with the pup for a few minutes last night and catch this shot just as the sun was trying to break throught the clouds. Was kind of playing around and didn't think I;d have much time so I set the camera to 7 exp. at +/- 1/3 stops and converted in Photmatix.
I'm kind of liken the way this one developed
Hope you all have a great weekend ahead of you

I managed to make friend out of this little guy in just a few minutes. He would sit on a branch near me, and sing his little heart out. Then he would fly off and come back with flies, and leave them on that branch for me to eat. I guess he thought I wasn't getting enough to eat or something. He never left but only for a minute or two and then suddenly reappear with food for me. He would eat it himself until he was sure I didn't seem to want it. What a neat little guy.
What's really funny is his mate is sitting on another branch nearby, and at first he was doing his dead level best to force her to leave. But after about a half hour or so, he forgot all about her and concentrated on me, how strange is that? So cute...
