The system we have installed in Ilkilorit comprises a heavy duty rubber bag as the digester. It sits mostly above ground and uses PVC pipes for inputs and outputs. Plastic gas pipes tap the gas from the digester and transfer it to the point of use. Early research has shown the waste from one cow (10-15kg per day) is enough to sustain a household of 4 people, meeting their domestic fuel needs for cooking. It is also possible to run a converted generator off the gas that can make electricity to power homes, schools and shops, or recharge batteries.

Grace Simon's aunt asks if Grace likes the system that she is testing on the final presentation date for EECS 481 in the Bob and Betty Beyster Building atrium on December 11, 2013.

EECS 481 Students in EECS Professor David Chesney's course have been designing systems to make it easier for Grace Simon to communicate, play, or be more independent at school or home.

Simon was diagnosed with cerebal palsy at six months old. While Grace doesn't have the muscle control to speak, extensively sign, or walk, she has a very capable mind that can read and communicate by signaling 'yes' or 'no.'

Solar Water Disinfection "SODIS"

ICROSS with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland has carried out extensive research on

solar disinfection of drinking water. Our findings suggest that solar disinfection of water may

significantly reduce morbidity in communities with no other means of disinfecting drinking

water, because of lack of resources or in the event of a disaster.

Here a child carrying bottle of SODIS water.

New World International is partnering with Dominic to develop proposals that would see Flexi Biogas devices installed in our clinics to power refrigerators, used to store volatile vaccinations. Due to the remoteness of some clinics, power failures (typically gas bottles running out) consequently leave communities without vaccinations for several months. Since these communities would be able to produce Flexi Biogas independently, this would no longer be a problem.

The first installment/pilot has been at Ilkilorit high school, where ICROSS have just opened a new health clinic serving the surrounding Maasai communities. The teachers at the school now use their Biogas up to 5 times a day to cook and make tea and are delighted with how easy it is to use. They no longer have any need for charcoal or their old charcoal Jiko (charcoal burning stove) and the schoolchildren are happy to bring the required bucket of dung each day for their teachers.

ICROSS, with funding from the Global Fund, has a home based care programme where 170 volunteers care for terminally ill aids patients. ICROSS is in charge of the training of the community health workers (CHVs) and distribution of prophylaxis and nutritional supplements among other things. We quickly realised the stigma and discrimination our volunteers met, both external and internal. After close dialogue with a number of volunteers, a comprehensive stigma and discrimination workshop was tailored. The workshop was incorporated into a refresher course for our CHVs on home based care.
