Solar Water Disinfection "SODIS"
ICROSS with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland has carried out extensive research on
solar disinfection of drinking water. Our findings suggest that solar disinfection of water may
significantly reduce morbidity in communities with no other means of disinfecting drinking
water, because of lack of resources or in the event of a disaster.

300 people die of HIV/AIDS related cases daily in Kenya.
The HIV/AIDS pandemic in Kenya has great socio-economic effects. The government declared AIDS a National disaster in 1999. Since then AIDS has been streamlined into all government Ministries due to the multi-sectoral of its effects. Nationally, HIV prevalence rate now for adults stands at 6.1%. Women of age 15-49 are 740,000. Children with HIV/AIDS are 150,000 and the number of AIDS orphans (age 0-17 years) stands at 1,100,000.
Each month in Kenya, over 3,000 babies are born to HIV-positive mothers. Kenya’s health system is ill-equipped for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS related diseases.
Bondo and Siaya are large districts in Nyanza on the edge of Lake Victoria with a total area of 2507km2. They are densely populated with small farm holdings that provide only a subsistence existence; consequently 61% of people live below the poverty line.

Through a community health worker training, 20 women from each of the five communities were identified tounder go TBA training. These women would attend two one-week seminars facilitated by ministry of health workers. The women were taught the essentials of neonatal and maternal health, how to recognise abnormal symptoms and when to refer pregnant women to maternal health clinics. Moreover, the women would learn how to deliver, although home deliveries are not encouraged, they become equipped to deal with emergency deliveries. TBA kits were provided by ICROSS Ireland and contain all the necessary tools to assist a delivery. This project trained 100 TBAs in five communities. Throughout the project, ICROSS worked closely with district health officers who drew from local expertise and taught using a culturally appropriate birth attendant curriculum.

Malaria is rising dramatically and more people are dying of malaria in Africa than HIV/AIDS.
In 2010, malaria caused an estimated 655 000 deaths (with an uncertainty range of 537 000 to 907 000), mostly among African children. Maurice was one of them. He was just fourteen.

We saw him starting out, in a kilt, in a snowstorm and thought it must be an April Fool's joke!
...the word on the internet is that he completed his walk in April,1987. Playing the bagpipes as he went; he raised about $25,000 and walked 6,000 miles.

'El señor de el autobus se llama Marino, gran amigo mío desde hace muchos años. Es de Chinacota y viaja a Pamplona todos los días por una de las vías alternas de ese pueblo y sale a El Diamante.
Marino, viene a buscar mercancía a Pamplona, verduras, víveres, etc. Por tanto sube vacío. Hablé con él para que lleve migrantes a diario por un precio de pasaje accesible (3mil pesos) desde nuestro Punto de Apoyo, por cada persona adulta, los niños no pagan. La organización On The Ground International, paga los pasajes diariamente.

Grace Simon tests the final version of a student project, Speller Eye Tracking (SET), on the final presentation date for projects of an EECS 481 course in the Bob and Betty Beyster Building atrium on December 11, 2013.
SET is an application that controls the cursor on a computer using eye tracking and gaze estimation. The SET keyboard is an on-screen keyboard with multiple input, output, and organization features.
EECS 481 Students in EECS Professor David Chesney's course have been designing systems to make it easier for Grace Simon to communicate, play, or be more independent at school or home.
Simon was diagnosed with cerebal palsy at six months old. While Grace doesn't have the muscle control to speak, extensively sign, or walk, she has a very capable mind that can read and communicate by signaling 'yes' or 'no.'

Several weeks ago Brian Williams profiled the children of the Afghan Child Education and Care Organization (AFCECO) and its founder Andeisha Farid in Kabul, Afghanistan for NBC Nightly News’ segment Making a Difference (video).
NBC listeners responded very generously by sending contributions over the Internet. The bridge used to connect these children with child sponsors was CharityHelp International (CHI), which I profiled in the Huffington Post last spring.
I was so excited to see Andeisha and her kids featured by Brian, and receiving desperately needed funds through CharityHelp, that I interviewed Brian about this last week in HuffPo.
Mr Obama--Please remember your promises to increase world debt reduction and help end global poverty. Thank you!

Over the course of 4 days, May 15-18, volunteers from Qualcomm, local residents, business owners, and artists will converge in the alleyways to take part in their transformation by painting murals, installing signage, marking pathways, installing lights, weeding and planting, and a variety of other designs as determined by the community. This event will culminate into a series of block parties in each project location, featuring music, food, and guest speakers.
ICROSS, with funding from the Global Fund, has a home based care programme where 170 volunteers care for terminally ill aids patients. ICROSS is in charge of the training of the community health workers (CHVs) and distribution of prophylaxis and nutritional supplements among other things. We quickly realised the stigma and discrimination our volunteers met, both external and internal. After close dialogue with a number of volunteers, a comprehensive stigma and discrimination workshop was tailored. The workshop was incorporated into a refresher course for our CHVs on home based care.

Ilkilorit - here children are collecting cowdoung for Biogas installation.
New World International is partnering with Dominic to develop proposals that would see Flexi Biogas devices installed in our clinics to power refrigerators, used to store volatile vaccinations. Due to the remoteness of some clinics, power failures (typically gas bottles running out) consequently leave communities without vaccinations for several months. Since these communities would be able to produce Flexi Biogas independently, this would no longer be a problem.
The first installment/pilot has been at Ilkilorit high school, where ICROSS have just opened a new health clinic serving the surrounding Maasai communities. The teachers at the school now use their Biogas up to 5 times a day to cook and make tea and are delighted with how easy it is to use. They no longer have any need for charcoal or their old charcoal Jiko (charcoal burning stove) and the schoolchildren are happy to bring the required bucket of dung each day for their teachers.

Celebrating our amazing EOP Class of 2023! We take great pride in recognizing the remarkable journeys of our exceptional students. Did you know that some of our brightest minds began their CSUN adventure as special admits? EOP leaders saw their immense potential beyond high school grades and with mentoring and support these individuals blossomed into successful college graduates!
Let's also take a moment to honor and celebrate those who were part of our EOP Resilient Scholars Program, designed to provide unwavering support to former foster youth throughout their academic pursuit. These resilient individuals have proven time and again that they are true overachievers, surpassing all expectations along their journey.
As we bid farewell to the EOP Class of 2023, we couldn't be prouder of their remarkable accomplishments and unwavering determination.
Food donated to malnourished children.
