On our trip down south, February 24, 2018. We stopped at Shag Point/Matakaea as I had never been there before. Matakaea is the name of the pa (fortified village). We have left Dunedin and going to stay in Timaru for a night before heading back to Christchurch.

Shag Point/Matakaea has a rich history, from early Ngai Tahu settlement to historic coalmining. The area has diverse marine life. It has interesting flora, is great for wildlife viewing, and is geologically fascinating.

Flat rock platforms provide an easy haul-out site for New Zealand fur seals, and cliff-top viewing areas allow you to observe seal behaviour without disturbing their rest.

Whalers discovered the first bituminous coal in New Zealand here in the 1830s. By 1862 the exposed coal seams were found to be commercially viable and were successfully mined until 1972, when flooding eventually closed shafts that extended under the coast. Evidence of coal mining is still obvious throughout the reserve.

Matakaea is jointly managed by DOC and Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu. Matakaea has Topuni status. The mana (authority) and rangatiratanga (chieftainship) of Ngai Tahu over the area is recognised publicly by this status. Ngai Tahu takes an active role in managing the natural and cultural values of the area.

Sorry I've been away; this is what occupies my time between Christmas and Easter...Pysanky, Ukrainian Easter Eggs. I'm busy creating. Here is a view of my work.

A beautiful Sunday to you all!

One more of the series! I think is is the best shot of the Making OF-Series? What do you think about it? I really like the angle and the depth of field.

We all have problems. Some have more than others.

This is another experiment in creating a different feel using colour and tonal manipulation. I didn't have a particular end in mind, but I kept experimenting with Artizen HDR until I got something. I started with a noise-corrected image from Bibble Pro (with Noise Ninja). The original was shot in ISO800. Using the tonal mapping in Artizen, I was able to extract even more muscle definition from the subject. I also managed to get an exadurated gradient from the sky.

Making butter and cheese would have been a key undertaking at the farmhouse I am currently illustrating. This large butter churn is probably too advanced and unlikely to have been around in the 17th century which is what I am drawing. However it was an interesting exercise to draw it quickly and follow what W H Pyne mist have drawn quickly from life in the 18th century.

Ripples always remind me of my friend Mandel. Mandel is a New York transplant who hails from the Bronx. We used to work together and lunched together quite regularly. Whenever Mandel drove us to lunch his parking strategy would be to look for a parking spot as close to the restaurant as possible and if none were available, engage in a process of ever widening concentric circles until he found the closest spot. I used to beg him to park far away, telling him that we would actually get there quicker on foot, and be healthier for the experience. It was to no avail. His style was hardwired into his Bronx genes. Somedays we made some pretty big ripples before we found the ideal spot.

2011 Ford Crown Victoria PCF with the California Highway Patrol. I was given the chance to photograph it somewhere that was not in a station parking lot or next to a brick wall, rather out in its natural habitat! Most of us know that this car was retired in recent months from CHP Contra Costa (320). All of these photos are located in Brentwood, CA making for beautiful scenery! It racked up quite a bit of miles, I believe it was around 188k which is not much compared to some of its sisters. The officer loved it to death, and never wanted to get rid of it but time goes on. Never forget the polar bear!

A big "Thank You" to Lena who helped me out to that day!

Please be so kind as to visit her website! She´s a very ambitious photographer and passionated wedding photographer!

... a family business making handmade bricks and roof tiles, seen beside the road to Tepatitilan - one man is mixing the local red soil with other clay, while an other man will shape the mix into bricks with the help of a wooden box, (not seen here), and an other man (in background) is laying them out to dry in the sun before they are stacked into huge square, hallow stacks, the actual "ovens", which will be fired from within!
