I am sitting in the Phoenix airport waiting for my overnight flight to Nova Scotia and reading a wonderful new book, H is for Hawk, by the British naturalist and writer, Helen MacDonald. The book, reminiscent of Annie Dillard's ground-breaking Pilgrim at Tinker Creek in 1975, is a memoir of the author's experience training a goshawk in modern-day London. It address many things including the ancient art of falconry, but especially the complex moral issues involved in taming wild birds, and the rights of some species to kill others.
I remembered taking photos of a hawk in my back yard in Hudson, Florida last spring and of being horrified later that day to see 'my" hawk snatch and devour a squirrel in front of my eyes. Here is one of those photos, with a more traditional profile of the same hawk in the comment box below.
Bonnie, if you read this.... you would love this book!

Well, it's my last day of being 41!!!!!!!!!!!
Tomorrow I will be in the words of Jennifer Anniston...30-12...lol
So, I decided to go out with a splash....(No photographers got wet during the making of this shot...thankfully...although it was close...lol..:O))
I will be celebrating my Birthday in Colchester tomorrow, so if I don't visit any of your wonderful streams, that would be why....I will endeavour to get around to you all upon my return..:O))
Hopefully the weather will be kind to me tomorrow, although...it's looking like being a dull and cloudy day...as opposed to a sunny one, so I may go to the Zoo again or something...may as well spend my Birthday with some of God's creatures, at least on the most part they like me..lol...:O)))
I'm looking forward to having my jelly and ice cream party tomorrow anyway....I'm 30-12 going on 5.....lol
Anyhoo...I hope everybody has a wonderful Sunday and a great new week ahead..:O))
Making Hay in the Wimmera, where a team of tractors and balers move in, one team mows, then leaves it to cure, this can take days or weeks, another comes and rakes it ready to bale, then another comes through the night and bales it before the warmth of the Sun makes it too crisp to bale. Soon after the loaders stack into large groups and then within hours it is loaded and off to market. What I have here was all in one day, and the next day the paddock was bare.
This is a park I had been to many times and this particular day was looking like any other day. I wasn't seeing anything new to photograph. But then I saw the sprinklers. This wasn't new, but they created something different. I took shots of them like they were models on a fashion catwalk. I took all the pics in color as I always do but converted a few of them to b&w. The Völklingen Ironworks (German: Völklinger Hütte) is located in the German town of Völklingen, Saarland. In 1994, it was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
It is an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH).
In 1873, Julius Buch began planning of a steel works near Völklingen on the banks of the Saar river. However, this planned work was not completed. In 1881, Carl Röchling began new construction. Two years later the first smelter began operation. The plant closed in 1986.
Today, the Völklinger Hütte is a museum. The Ferrodrom is an interactive science center focusing on the making of iron. Visitors can tour the production areas. In addition, temporary exhibits, on a variety of topics are hosted in the large power halls. In the summer, there are occasional concerts held.

[RP Pic] "Crossing into Idaho without much in the way of trouble. Things are still pretty wild out here, but I haven't seen any Infected yet or had much trouble with thugs. Lotsa dry bones alongside the old highways though, a testament to the fact that while civilization may be making a come-back; it hasn't reached here just yet."
Spent the past week taking the grader into the hills driving high on top of the ranges, making tracks.

Tom and I met my mom and sisters in Michigan's famous "Christmas Town" (Frankenmuth) for the holidays last weekend.
This (and more) was featured in a blog post! I'd love it if you took a look at the whole set.
