This fantastic show and (tell) gave local “makers” an opportunity to share their talent and inspire others to explore their inner inventor.

Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, the Columbia Mini Maker Faire is a localized version of the national Maker Faire which host 90,000 visitors in San Mateo each year.

Maker Battery is a late nineteenth coastal artillery battery in Cornwall that is typical ofbatteries reflecting the technological and political changes of the time. Constructed in 1887 to expand the capabilities of the nearby Grenville Battery, Maker was initially equipped with a single 12.5-inch Rifled Muzzle Loading (RML) gun. This was expanded 3 years later to three 12.5-inch RML guns. By 1900 these were outdated and outgunned armaments, and while a proposal for 9.2-inch BL guns was dismissed, in 1903 the battery's two northern emplacements were upgraded to the 6-inch BL Mk. VII. Enduring another 8 years the battery was disarmed in 1911 and never reutilised.

The three emplacements are in good condition, each with their associated subterranean magazines. The 12.5-inch RML emplacement retains its pivot, race and traversing arc.

Maker Battery is owned by a nearby estate and rented out to private tenants. This was a permission visit with the tenant who was on site.

While the 3D printer buzzed in the background, participants of the Maker Camp at the Herndon Library learned about electricity with Squishy Circuits. They let their creativity run wild and made cool projects out of conductive dough, like this adorable house!
