Beaumont's 4th annual Mural Festival, sponsored by the Beaumont CVB, was held in March.
Both the inside and outside of the Civic Center received new murals, as did an office supply company just north of the downtown area.
In addition, there were temporary wooden cubes set up on the grounds between the Civic CEnter, main library, and the Julie Rogers Theatre to showcase the talent of local artists.

spring_alpha is a multi-player game set in an industrialized housing estate whose inhabitants are attempting to create their own autonomous society in contrast to that of the regime in which they live. The game serves as a "sketch pad" for testing out alternative forms of social practice at both the 'narrative' level, in terms of the game story, and at a 'code' level, as players are able to re-write the code that runs the simulated world. The original narrative is based on a series of drawings by Chad McCail, "Spring" and "Evolution is Not Over Yet", which also shape the game's visual style. The original stories and images become a framework that is fleshed-out by people's own ideas and experiences.
The basic aim of the game is to change the rules by which the society in that world runs. This is done through re-writing the code that simulates that world, creating new types of behaviour and social interaction. How effective this becomes depends on the players' ability to spread these new ideas into the society.
The project is built on top of a FLOSS gaming and simulation system called Social Versioning system (SVS), which incorporates forms of FLOSS development practices (such as networked collaborative coding) into the game engine.
make art is an international festival dedicated to the integration
of free/libre and open source software (FLOSS) in digital arts.
The second edition of make art takes place in Poitiers (France),
from the 3rd to the 8th of April 2007.
make art offers performances, exhibitions, lectures and workshops,
focused on the blurred line between art and software programming.
The event is dedicated to artists who create their own tools, and
apply the same rules to art as to free software development.
-
Besides the purely technical and legal aspects of free sofware, there is our society's social and economical future at stake. A generation born during the technological boom, a generation that understands the ins and outs of electronic power struggles in the post-industrial societies, is living in a world that is hardly compatible with today's economics.
At a time when intellectual property is fiercely debated, while some people cling on to their little bits of territory, others have chosen to share knowledge, art and networks.
make art constitutes a tool for reflecting on the propagation of free software in artistic creation and we want it to be a view onto the social, political and economic myths and realities linked to this phenomenon.
./configure --without-ghosts && make art
Make more of the people who matter to you FEEL better.
Your life will change after this commitment.
But... Make sure it's a win-win relationship.
Not at the expense of your fulfilment.
Not at the expense of theirs.
Normally, I go to the gym on Tuesdays, but decided I'd rather go meandering around downtown, instead. Both of them are a workout.
These murals (with the exception of the new black & white one) were painted during the 2024 Mural Festival.

The Giglio Distributing Company warehouse is the site of seven of the murals painted during the 2024 Beaumont Mural Festival.
Founded in 1955 by Charles J. Giglio with one employee, one truck, and a brand new deal to distribute Miller High Life beer, Giglio Distributing Company now carries over 100 brands of beverages, and has distribution centers in Beaumont, Longview and Palestine.
This mural is titled "Alchemy".
Most of what we're moving towards, particularly as creative people, is expressing ourselves in the most honest way.
This takes practice.
This was Picasso's ideal, and it was this value that kept him producing into his old age.
He didn't have a singular goal like 'make 500 paintings.' He simply decided to live by the mantra of honest expression and continual growth.
There is no final destination for this. It is a continual work in progress.
As it should be for all of us.
Seeking the truth will keep you creating forever.
And that's a good thing.

After the train traveled out of view, I continued on with my original plan, which was to wander downtown Beaumont.
I spent a fair bit of time around the Fire Museum of Texas, and the adjoining C.A. "Pete" Shelton Plaza, home to The Texas Firefighters Memorial, a 9-11 Memorial, the The World's Largest Working Fire Hydrant.
The museum is housed in the former main fire station, built in 1927. It houses numerous fire engines and other historical memorabilia.
This audiovisual performance, by Benjamin Cadon (Labomedia/Orléans), is an attempt to recall the story of the 132nd Big Bang, in which we currently find ourselves. Benjamin creates several tableaux, moving through different steps of this evolution, from nothing to everything. Audio and video mutually feed each other, generating the different audiovisual landscapes of this story.

After my ramble down College Street and back to the car, I decided to check out another mural that was painted during the 2024 Mural Festival.
Sometimes, in life... Crap happens, and you need to accept it.
Just don't ruminate on it.
Don't give those thoughts energy.
Most of it is based on assumption and skewed perception anyway.
Use that energy to focus on what's good; on what is working.
Soon the pain and irritation will fade.
