Flint corn, (Zea mays indurata; also known in most countries as Indian corn or sometimes calico corn) is the same species as, but a different variant of maize.

Ther is a great confusion between English and US.

In England, corn means wheat.

But in the USA, it means maize

During WW 2, that's the reason why England had to eat mainly maize bread, instead of wheat bread. At the beginning of the Nazi blockade from continental Europe in 1940, England ordered huge reserves of " corn" from the USA... and recieved maize !

France is the world's ninth largest producer of maize (15,6 million tons in 2012). Here is a field of maize just after harvesting and before the stalks are ploughed back into the soil.

 

Maize presents a number of problems, one being that the pollen is not very nutritious for bees. Also, it demands lots of water.

 

Aesthetically, it's unpleasant, too, because it's tall enough to block one's view of the beautiful countryside in this part of France.
