Brazilian climber Tomás Gridi Papp free climbs the last pitch of "Domingos Giobbi", a classic aid route on the south face of Pedra do Baú. São Bento do Sapucaí, São Paulo, Brazil, Sunday, May 16, 2004.
Domingos Giobbi, is a classic aid route conquered in 1989 by Luis Makoto Ishibe and Hugo Armelin. The route was first graded as a 5.9 with A3 in very loose rock with its last pitch being considered the A3. Now, with more modern equipment and stronger climbing techniques, it can probably be considered an A2+ with 5.11c free climbing the last rope length.
Pedra do Baú, together with its sisters Pedra do Bauzinho and Ana Chata, form a sharp rocky ridge that reaches as high as 1,950 meters (6,397 feet) with 350 meter (1,148 feet) tall cliffs. It is located inside a natural reserve and attracts tourists and rock climbers from all over the country for its beautiful views and excellent climbing routes.

These people had walked out on a narrow stone harbour wall. I shot a few frames till the right combination of silhouettes presented itself.

This is one of two similar photographs I made on this early autumn day at Joseph D. Grant County Park. At this time of year, the grasses there are completely dead and brown. I spotted this oak from the Yerba Buena Trail, and was struck by how nicely the side-lighting set it off from the hills and mountain in the background. The clouds were dramatic that day, and by this time were taking on the colors of late afternoon. Although the 9,560 acre Joseph D. Grant County Park is located just east of San Jose, CA, it is a world away in terms of open space and quiet.

I was working away in my office where some of the windows face roughly West. It was late afternoon and the Sun was getting low in the sky.
As I worked on the computer (commenting on Flickr pics, natch) a beam of golden light streamed through the windows. I quickly grabbed a wooden stool and positioned a few IKEA glass vases to take advantage of the wonderful light.
I snapped away, Nikon Nikkor short telephoto manual focus lens and all, and crossed my fingers something would turn out.
I think the very best part of life is the surprises. But like I was telling a client today, "Luck is where opportunity meets preparation."

Washburn Trail, Joseph D. Grant County Park, Santa Clara County, CA, 2/23/2007

This was a particularly beautiful winter's day in Joseph D. Grant County Park. I had enjoyed the afternoon wandering the hills near the beginning of Washburn Trail, making a number of photographs with impressive clouds in the sky. Eventually the sun was getting low and I headed back toward the car with a sense of accomplishment and completion. I happened to look over my shoulder glimpsing this wonderful scene, and proceeded to make one final photograph - my favorite of the day! To do a good job with landscape photography as with any occupation, it's best not to arrive late for work or leave too early! Here we see a grand old oak tree - dormant for winter - with impossibly intricate, gnarled, yet graceful branches whose collective shape is echoed in cumulus clouds that are just starting to take on the colors of sunset. This end of Grant County Park features numerous majestic oak trees standing proudly on gently rolling grass-covered hills. In the distance is snowcapped Mt. Hamilton - one of the landmark peaks surrounding the San Francisco Bay area. At 4,360 feet, it is the tallest mountain overlooking Santa Clara (Silicon) Valley, and is the site of Lick Observatory, the first permanently occupied mountain-top observatory.

This oak tree is quite old but rather small; it appears larger than life because we're looking slightly up at it from the Yerba Buena Trail. It was so windy out here this morning that I didn't think it was possible to pull off a single photograph (and the ticks didn't make things easy either!). I had to boost my iso up to 400. Rarely will I shoot faster than 100, but I had no choice. When shooting in these condition, you just have to keep pulling the trigger and hope you get a slight break in the gust. I actually like the mix of some moving flowers and some still ones in this scene, it adds to the feeling of motion. All in all not a very good year for wildflowers in the gorge.
