I enjoy the chance to photograph under a brooding and dramatic sky! On this winter's day in Joseph D. Grant County Park, the weather was beautiful and somewhat stormy. The abundance of clouds blowing by presented both opportunities and difficulties. These gorgeous cumulus storm clouds provided a perfect backdrop for a composition, while other clouds to the west (left) blocked the sunlight. I prepared my camera in front of this dormant and crumbling old oak tree and waited until the moment seen here in which the foreground became bathed in late afternoon sunlight, along with distant snowcapped mountains! The snow-covered mountains are known as Poverty Ridge, and are immediately west of Mt. Day and Black Mountain in the Diablo mountain range. The oak woodland at Grant County Park is typical of California. Oak trees provide breeding habitat and food for birds and mammals. The oak community includes species such as the Blue, Black, Live, and Valley Oaks. The old oak tree here is scarred and has lost several major branches, quite possibly during windy storms - nature's way of tree pruning.

This was one fo the photos I took on a family holiday in Guernsey. The evening sun made this boat look amazing.

Tiny pudgy fingers stretched out the car window to catch the breeze. :)

Here is a classic California golden sunset a friend and I enjoyed near the end of a long arduous hike one spring day. I had forgotten how challenging and steep Washburn Trail is in Joseph D. Grant County Park near San Jose, CA, and we started our adventure by hiking up the entire trail. Next we headed south on Cañada de Pala Trail and finally back downhill along Halls Valley Trail. Having carried my camera gear all day, I was weary by the time we reached this spot with a clear view to the west. Nevertheless, I sprang into action when I observed how the sun was setting over a beautiful arrangement of hills, and I had just enough time to make this single exposure. Evening haze created depth in the scene; trees on a distant ridge cast radial shadows in the golden glow! In 1968 California's legislature made "The Golden State" the official nickname, honoring California's long association with gold. Such connections can be found throughout the state's history and natural scenery. The name of the Golden Gate Bridge is a legacy from the days when California was a huge source of the precious metal. Sunsets, especially over the ocean here are often richly golden in color. The state's official flower, the golden poppy, can be found growing in abundance throughout the region, lending their hue to meadows, fields, and hillsides. The California Gold Rush of the 1850s is still seen as characterizing the state, which tends to generate technology, social, entertainment, and economic booms and busts.

At dawn on the final morning of an autumn visit to Bryce Canyon National Park I aimed my camera north into Bryce Amphitheater from Bryce Point and waited for the sun to rise. The sky was laced with stripes of dense clouds, but the horizon was mostly clear. At sunrise the clouds began to radiate brilliantly, casting a deep ruby glow upon the canyon before me. I was captivated by the intensely hued light illuminating the famously colored rocks! Below the Pink Cliffs on the opposite canyon rim at center is Silent City; Sunset Point is at far right. The sandstone pinnacles - lining the canyon walls and formed by wind, water, and ice erosion of river and lake bed sedimentary rocks - are known as hoodoos. This word was adopted after a circuitous journey across continents and cultures. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, black slaves of Hausa origin brought with them to the American south a magic practice called hoodoo. The word comes directly from the Hausa language where the verb hu'du'ba means to arouse resentment and produce retribution. Very early in America, hoodoo came to mean jinx or cast a spell. Native Americans of the northwest picked up the word from English-speaking fur trappers and used it to refer to any malignant creature or evil supernatural force. This is how it came to be applied to these strange columns of rock, for they were thought to be evil in the mythologies of many aboriginal peoples. In Blackfoot lore, the unusual shapes were giants whom the Great Spirit had turned to stone because of their evil deeds. Deep in the night, the petrified giants could awaken and throw boulders down upon humans passing nearby. European newcomers to the west heard native peoples' description of these odd formations and translated words from several languages including Dakota and Lakota and used the word hoodoo as the translation.

Brazilian climber Tomás Gridi Papp free climbs the last pitch of "Domingos Giobbi", a classic aid route on the south face of Pedra do Baú. São Bento do Sapucaí, São Paulo, Brazil, Sunday, May 16, 2004.

Domingos Giobbi, is a classic aid route conquered in 1989 by Luis Makoto Ishibe and Hugo Armelin. The route was first graded as a 5.9 with A3 in very loose rock with its last pitch being considered the A3. Now, with more modern equipment and stronger climbing techniques, it can probably be considered an A2+ with 5.11c free climbing the last rope length.

Pedra do Baú, together with its sisters Pedra do Bauzinho and Ana Chata, form a sharp rocky ridge that reaches as high as 1,950 meters (6,397 feet) with 350 meter (1,148 feet) tall cliffs. It is located inside a natural reserve and attracts tourists and rock climbers from all over the country for its beautiful views and excellent climbing routes.
