Valløy or Vallø is a peninsula by the Oslo Fjord in Slagen in Tønsberg municipality in Vestfold. The peninsula is only about 1 km long and half a km wide, and is located at the entrance to the town of Tønsberg from the east. The peninsula is small, but has nevertheless been very important in national and local industrial history. Valløy was located in the former Sem municipality, which was merged with Tønsberg in 1988.
In 1739, Vallø saltworks was established. The plant was in operation until 1860 when it was closed down. Since then came several industrial companies, including Vallø glassworks, Vallø wallpaper factory and from 1899 Scandinavia's first oil refinery. The first master of distillation was the Austrian Frantz Drtina. After only a few years, this company had problems with profitability, and in 1905 a new company, A / S Vallø Oljeraffineri, was started.
In connection with the saltworks, Valløy church was built in 1782. During the Napoleonic Wars, Valløy was equipped in 1808 with a cannon battery and coastal protection to defend the entrance to Tønsberg town and the saltworks. In the 1820s, Valløy became the port of call for Norway's first steamship, the DS «Constitutionen».
On April 24, 1945, the refinery and the island were bombed by British planes in what is later known as the bombing of Vallø. At least 52 Norwegian civilians were killed and an unknown number of German soldiers lost their lives. The refinery, which was run by Esso Norway from 1905, did not come back into operation until the early 1950s. The wallpaper factory was also rebuilt. At most, more than 500 people lived on the peninsula, but after World War II, the number dropped radically.
Valløy school was in use from 1915 to 1942.
Until 1960, oil was refined using sulfuric acid. The waste product acid stream was deposited on the east side of Vallø and has been there until Esso Norge AS in 2015 started work on removing acid stream, bleach soil and other oil residues. [1] It is estimated that around 300,000 tonnes of contaminated mass will be removed by boat or truck. The work, which is carried out by Veidekke Entreprenør AS and the Belgian company Deme Environmental Contractors (DEC). The work was completed in March 2020.

Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh City - Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh - Saigon - Sài Gòn - Worship in Traditional Chinese Buddhist Temple - Sacred House of Worship & Prayer - Burning of Incense - Joss sticks
Joss sticks are a type of incense used in many East Asian countries, traditionally burned before a Chinese religious image, idol or shrine. They can also be burned in front of a door, or open window as an offering to heaven, or devas. In modern days, joss sticks can be used for any purpose, such as to enhance the smell of a room, or to light fire crackers. The word "joss" is derived from the Latin deus (god) via Portuguese. Joss stick burning is an everyday practice in traditional Chinese religion. There are many different types of joss sticks used for different purposes or on different festive days.
Capturing smoke from joss sticks was a great fun, this shot is one of the best I've captured. Before coming to Asia I've pictured that I will be taking 1.000.000 photos like this, only when I got there I realized that you need right conditions and the right light from the right angle. Unfortunately I didnt have as many many opportunities as I was hoping for, however I didnt leave Asia empty handed as you can see.

Another of the series of photographs I took on our last night in Sedona. I had done some inquiries in town as to the best location for sunset reflection shots of Cathedral Rock, and was told that this was the place. This is probably the most popular and photographed scene from Sedona, and I felt that it was a kind of pilgrimage to go there, and stand with the other tripod carrying photographers. At this time of year there wasn't that much water in Oak Creek, and it was somewhat difficult to find enough for a decent reflection. I've posted two HDR images from this location, but this is from one single image.

Middle East - Sultanate of Oman - Dhofar Province - Salalah Area - صلالة - Ṣalālah - Rakhyut - Rakhyot - Beach village on scenic coastal location along Indian Ocean surrounded by rugged mountains during Khareef - Rainy Season bringing misty & foggy weather
Salalah and Dhofar region offers visitors an enormous variety of things to see and do. The natural beauty of the surrounding area is breathtaking. You can witness the stunning views of dramatic mountains reaching right to the edge of the sea. You can experience wadis and beaches as well as the springs. Salalah is a coastal city located on the shores of the Indian Ocean, in the southern part of Oman. Although close to the Arabian desert, Salalah enjoys a pleasant tropical climate and even in the summer the temperatures are not too hot as the coastal fringe of Dhofar and Salalah is touched by the winds of the southwest monsoon between June and September. The surface winds encourage an upwelling of colder waters in the Indian Ocean which cool the over-lying moisture-laden air. The fog cools temperatures considerably, such that Salalah is a popular destination for Gulf visitors in the summer as a respite from the relentless heat. The phenomenon of this rain-bearing fog is known locally as the Khareef.
This photo is taken at Dhalkut beach during Khareef season. Dhalkut is located on the far west of Dhofar and has enjoyed its own merchant sea trade with the ports of the Gulf and Yemen, exporting leather, honey, figs and frankincense. This wilayat has many springs which burst forth from the wadis of the Jebel al Qamar (Mountains of the Moon). The caves and grottos in the area have provided shepherds and flocks with safe refuge from adverse weather conditions for centuries. Dalkut is 160 Kilometres west of Salalah. To reach it, you drive to al Mughsail, then up the steep winding Aqeeshan road to the Niyabat of Shahb As'eeb in the Wilayat of Rakhyut and from there to Wadi Seeq and Dalkut. The seas off Dalkut's rocky shore are full of fish and crustaceans.
There are two groups of people when it comes to adding human figures into landscape photography. I used to belong to the one that tried to avoid any humans in the landscapes. However everything is subject to change and I realized that adding figure to the beautiful landscape gives it additional element. Viewer can more easily put himself/herself into the picture, imagining how it would be to be on such a place yourself. So now instead of waiting for everybody to disappear from the frame, I wait for them to get into picture !

Doha (Arabic: الدوحة, ' or ad-Dōḥa) is the capital city of Qatar. With a population of 400,051 according to the 2005, it is located in the Ad Dawhah municipality on the Persian Gulf. Doha is Qatar's largest city, with over 80% of the nation's population residing in Doha or its surrounding suburbs, and is also the economic center of the country. Doha is home to the Education City, an area devoted to research and education. Doha was the site of the first ministerial-level meeting of the Doha Development Round of World Trade Organization negotiations. The city of Doha also held the 2006 Asian Games, which was the world's largest Asian Games held.
This photo was actually meant to be desert shot, however when I’ve seen the overcast sky, I thought the desert photos would not come up as nice due to lack of shadows and I’ve decided to stay in the city instead. Jet Skiing is probably no. 1 leisure activity in the Middle East after shopping and dining out. There are many guys on jet skis during sunset time everyday to show off their skills to the crowd that gathers there. I am not sure how often there is a storm in Qatar but it is probably only once a year in Kuwait, therefore I was really glad to capture this stormy sky with heavy clouds reflecting colors of setting sun on the left side. U shaped corniche allows photographing Doha cityscape without necessity of being on the boat. I've captured many photos like this but I thought that the red JetSki stands out nicely from the shot.

Ecola State Park... North of Cannon beach here in Oregon. Sunset was not that great but you have to remember that 30 min. after sunset, the sky will sometimes "kick it" and give you something extra. That was the case here where I had started to head back (I was climbing all over those rocks during sunset) when the sky started to glow again. I was glad I had the camera on the tripod so I could capture this.

Haraz mountains is about 85 kms (a good 2-hour drive) from Sana'a. It reaches to 2300 meters above sea. As far as you can see there are mountains, smaller ones, bigger ones, and about 90 percent of these mountains are covered with terraces for agriculture. Not all of them are used anymore, because lots of locals have moved to the capital and there's just not enough people left to work all the fields. On every hilltop or big rock a town was built, for protection against enemies in the past, incredible constructions, it is mind-boggling how they managed to build them all ...

Great thing about desert around Dubai is that the sand is orange with very thin layer of red sand on the top which adds additional richness to the overall color. Desert safari in Dubai is very touristic thing to do, but it is big fun too. They generally stop at some lovely place just before sunset and give you a chance to take some photos with a wonderful light too.
A trip to the desert offers a real adventure into the magnificent landscape of the unique sands of Arabia. This safari tour takes you right into the heart of the desert where you experience the excitement of a roller-coaster tour down the astonishing high dunes. A stop for a breathtaking view of the endless desert gives an opportunity to watch the sun-set over this tranquil scenery.

Sana, San'a, Sanaa, or Sana'a - capital of Yemen and one of the most facinating in the Arab world with it's unique architecture, bustling souqs, friendly inhabitants and lack of tourists.
Sana’a is one of the ancient Yemen cities dating date back to the Sabean dynasty. The oldest reference to its existence is found in inscriptions dates back to the late the 1st Century AD. The inscriptions also refer to the historical Palace of Ghamdan associated with Salheen Palace in Marib . This suggested that Sana’a was the capital of the Himyrate dynasty at the onset of the 6th century AD when king Yousef Athar Dhu Nawas the last of the Himyarite kings was in power . It was also the capital of the Abyssinian rules and after them the Persians who also made Sana’a their capital.

If you always thought that Dead Sea is a kind of middle eastern peaceful pond where you will just float while reading your book (I did when I first came there few years back), think again. Early months in Middle East can be rather stormy. (We had experienced some snow in Jordan too). Weather across GCC was very changeable for last few weeks, which means the hot wave is just behind the door… and there we come again… 30C+,…. 40C+,…. 50C+….
The Dead Sea (Hebrew: יָם הַמֶּלַח, Yām Ha-Melaḥ, "Sea of Salt"; Arabic: البَحْر المَيّت, al-Baḥr l-Mayyit, "Dead Sea") is a salt lake between Israel and the West Bank to the west, and Jordan to the east. It is 422 metres (1,385 ft) below sea level, and its shores are the lowest point on the surface of the Earth on dry land. The Dead Sea is 378 m (1,240 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. It is also one of the world's saltiest bodies of water, with 33.7 percent salinity. Only Lake Assal (Djibouti), Garabogazköl and some hypersaline lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica (such as Don Juan Pond and perhaps Lake Vanda) have a higher salinity. It is 8.6 times as salty as the ocean. This salinity makes for a harsh environment where animals cannot flourish, hence its name. The Dead Sea is 67 kilometres (42 mi) long and 18 kilometres (11 mi) wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River.

Sharjah (Arabic: الشارقة) is one of the emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The emirate covers 2,600 km² (1,003 mi²) and has a population of over 800,000 (2008). The emirate of Sharjah comprises the city of Sharjah (the seat of the emirate), and other minor towns and enclaves such as Kalba, Dibba Al-Hisn and Khor Fakkan. Sharjah also claims two islands, Sir Abu Nu’ayr and Abu Musa, with the latter claim being disputed and the island being controlled by Iran.
Historically, Sharjah was one of the wealthiest towns in this region with a settlement in existence for over 5000 years. In the early 18th century Al Qasimi clan (Huwala tribe) established itself in Sharjah, c. 1727 declaring Sharjah independent. On 8 January 1820, Sheikh Sultan I signed the General Maritime Treaty with Britain, accepting a protectorate to keep the Ottoman Turks out. Like four of its neighbours, Ajman, Dubai, Ras al-Khaimah, and Umm al-Qaiwain, its position on the route to India made it important enough to be recognized as a salute state.

The Bahrain World Trade Center (also known as: Bahrain WTC or BWTC) is a 240 m (787 ft) high twin tower complex by South African architect Shaun Killa, located in Manama, Bahrain. The building is the first skyscraper in the world to integrate wind turbines into its design. The 50-floor structure is constructed next to the King Faisal Highway, close to popular landmarks such as the towers of BFH, NBB, Abraj Al Lulu and the scenic Pearl Roundabout. It is the second tallest building in Bahrain, after the twin towers of the Bahrain Financial Harbor.
Three skybridges connect the towers; each holding one large wind turbine with a nameplate capacity of 225kW each, totalling to 675kW of wind energy production. These turbines, each measuring 29 m (32 yd) in diameter, face north, which is the direction from which air from the Persian Gulf blows in. The sail-shaped buildings on either side are designed to funnel wind through the gap to provide the maximum amount of wind passing through the turbines. This was confirmed by wind tunnel tests, which showed that the buildings create an ‘S’-shaped flow, ensuring that any wind coming within a 45° angle to either side of the central axis will create a wind stream that remains perpendicular to the turbines. This significantly increases their potential to generate electricity. The wind turbines are expected to provide 11% to 15% of the towers' total power consumption, or approximately 1.1 to 1.3 GWh a year. This is equivalent to providing the lighting for about 300 homes annually.

Best On Black. While I took many more photos over my week in paradise, I'm closing out my series (for now) with one final look at the setting sun. From this view, I am standing on the shores of Wailea beach, looking due west. The landmas to the right of the sun is west Maui. The Island of Lanai is obscured in clouds. Wailea beach has some absolutely gorgeous sunsets to behold, and every night was a surprise. This is the preferred thing to do after touring all over maui during the day.
This shot was actually taken in the remains of a late afternoon shower. I was huddled close to the ground with an umbrella propped over the camera waiting for light. While I didn't get the explosive light show I was hoping for, the end result was still quite beautiful. The sun pierced through the clouds for all of 30 seconds before it disappeared again below clouds at the horizon.
