X is for Xylota segnis.
This fly is only known by its Latin name, but is a member of the Hoverfly family.
I took this back in 2020, but managed to get three photos of it, at the time. I retook one of them for the challenge the other day and gave it the best crop I could.
Better viewed large and thank you for your favourites. :)

I bought some cactus v5 wireless transmitters & a Yongnuo YN-560 II Speedlight Flash. The Yongnuo flash was left of the camera at about a 45 degree angle. I had the SB-900 directly behind the subject with a warming gel. My only disappointment was finding out that the V5 transmitters cannot do high speed sync. However, when I added the SB-900 to the camera I was able do so with the Yongu off camera. Unfortunately I don't recall what the power settings were for each flash.
Macro X 5 magnification using Canon MPE 65mm. Lit using a LED light panel below and two small led hand battery powered lights from left and right. The LED panel below sat below a large Perspex blue panel to create the coloured background.
One of the most exciting aspects of macro and extreme macro of this type at around 5 times life size (on the sensor) is that you are able to view a world typically unseen by the human eye. The next time you see one of these little insects floating across the wet grass in September & October have a look at their head and you will see just how small the detail you can see in this image.

I think Patience is one of the key elements in photography. You will get your desired shot sooner or later. Wildlife photographers are master in this.
For these shots had to try for three days. But I think it worth it. These ants were thirsty. And these are plain water. But You can use sugar water.
Taken from my roof. So I haven't had to travel anywhere for this.
Had a lot of time to observe. And I could focus only on the shot. This is the beauty of macro photography. You don't need to go far. Your subjects are around you may be they are on the roof of your house or at the backyard or maybe inside your head. Yes you could make your own interesting subjects and photograph them in your bedroom, kitchen or bathroom and they could be world class. Many world class macro photographs are taken this way. For example don komarechka takes most of his extraordinary droplet photos from his kitchen. So we shouldn't let immobility our limitation. We could always find something everywhere
