First, I thank you all for your good wishes, and am happy to say my cats are both responding...slowly... to the antibiotics and are no longer in danger of dying. Very weak but starting to eat and drink and groom.
Now, about this photo:
As some of you know, I got interested in Macro Photography while still a child, back in the 1950s.... long before I had any equipment to actually MAKE macro images.
The story goes: My mother went to a seminar about wildflowers (she taught me all the Ohio wildflowers). The room was full of mostly ladies. The first slide came up on the screen and it was a close up of a wealth of golden petals and exquisite little curly-cues. My mom said the room of ladies all gasped in wonder. Then the speaker told them all it was a close up of a dandelion. My mom said how everyone was amazed that there was such beauty to be found by setting aside our familiarity with something, and, instead, looking at it closely.
I wanted, from the time I heard that story, to produce photos like that. I was born very near sighted... close to being legally blind... but, of course, not blind at all. However, my eyesight meant I could really get close to things.... macro vision I now call it. So I spent the first two thirds of my life seeing things very close up... things I wished I could photograph.
Now, I can... well, sort of. I still don't have a macro lens, and I wish I had "micro" equipment, but I don't know if I ever will!
So, here, is the dandelion, taken with reverse lens macro... in honor of my mother and her inspiring stories and lessons which led me to a path I enjoy greatly.

Oil on water is one of the first subjects that everyone should try out when they get a macro lens. We have been having fun making some amazing abstract shots using this method, you can see how in our latest video >>> youtu.be/mixLIIQ5N00
It's a super simple setup that can get some colourful and creative shots right out of the gate. We have spent many hours taking shot after shot of swirling oil and water mixtures to get some amazing varied results.
All it takes is a shallow glass bowl, some oil, water and a colourful backdrop. Using the Adaptalux Studio and our Colour Filters, we were able to change the colours and gradients behind the oil with ease, getting hundreds of unique shots really quickly.
If you are looking for a new macro subject to try out, definitely give this a go. The colourful abstract shots can make for some great desktop backgrounds. If you're into video, the motion of the water is really pleasing to capture if you have the right lighting.

Who can spot the Bug In The Bokeh Tree? Got bit by a spider and instead of growing big muscles like Peter Parker in Spiderman, I was shrunk down to the size of a spider instead. (Didn't really get bit by a spider in case anyone is concerned. )
Relaxing day today at home with the kids. Took my camera out with the 50mm trying to mess around with some bokeh shots. Got this one with a little bit of tree trunk in focus and had the perfect idea to use this spiderman pose shot I took the other day but never did anything with. I will upload the actual full size spiderman pose in the next day or so. Anyways, enjoy your imagination and the rest of the night!

Pine cones are a quick and easy subject to shoot at home, so we thought we would take a look at how to get some cool and creative shots from a couple of pine cones in our latest tutorial video.

A lot of you may have seen the pine cone shot on our homepage, it's one of our favourite shots to demonstrate what the Adaptalux Studio can do. We used the same pine cone (and a new one) to get a few more interesting shots.
A shot like this is achieved by pointing two coloured Lighting Arms across each other, shining onto the pine cone. You can see more about the setup in the video or the blog post here - bit.ly/adaptaluxpines
The coloured lights shine off the spines of the pine cones really well. Depending on the angle of the camera and the lights, they can create some amazing highlights along the ridges of each spine and shadows deep in the pine cone where the light can't reach.
